Shamrocks leaving for Ireland
A sense of
excitement and
anticipation
prevails for 18
area men and their families,
who are either team members
or associates of the St.
Columban Men's Soccer
Team, "'Tile Shamrocks," as
they prepare for their trip to
Ireland.
They leave from Toronto
Nov. 5 arriving at London's
Heathrow Airport, then on to
Dublin, Ireland, where the
adventure begins.
In Dublin, they will play a
soccer game against the "Hot
Press MGB" at the Dublin
Sports Complex, travelling on
to Kilkenny, they hope to
encounter another soccer
team for a game, and also
learn about the sport known
as "hurling," something like
our game of baseball.
From Kilkenny, they will
travel to Cork, perhaps taking
in some of the sights such as
"the Blarney Stone" and
Cobh, or enjoying a golf
tourney. Travelling from there
to Limerick, the possibilities
of more sports include
another golf tourney, rugby
game or hurling, and a
planned soccer game against
a team from the University of
Limerick. Ireland is a place
with many sights and sounds,
and a lot of history. There is
St. Columbon News
much to see and do during
their stay in Ireland before
leaving Shannon for London
and Toronto Nov. 16. We will
look forward to some great
tales upon their return.
Parishioners at St.
Columban Parish were visited
by Father Simon Stefanowicz
from Czewstochowa, Poland.
Father Simon has been
travelling in the area giving
sermons and missions and
preaching the message of
"Divine Mercy."
Four new altar servers,
Dawn Cronin, Danika Klaver,
Bridgit O'Reilly and Jacob
Gillanders-Balfour were
installed with a simple
ceremony during mass by the
pastor, Father Lance
Magdziak.
Ruth and Werner Marx,
Dekka Lake, British
Columbia (near Kamloops)
are visiting her sister, Marie
Hicknell, as well as other
relatives and friends in the
area. They will also travel to
the Ottawa area to visit
family members there betore
returning to British Columbia.
Ron and Mary Ryan have
returned from a visit with
their son, Joe and Paula Ryan,
Brent, Megan and Erin, in
Winnipeg.
One of the sights
was an evening visit
with their
grandchildren to the
Winnipeg Zoo to enjoy "Boo
at the Zoo" in anticipation of
Hallowe'en. Pirates, dragons,
ghosts, witches and goblins,
princesses and fairytale
characters all added to the
excitement.
Students at St. Columban
School have participated in
the fall cross-country events
including the Pat Cook run in
Stratford, and the meet at
Benmiller.
At Benmiller, Alex Murray
came fifth in the 13 and over
age category.
The St. Columban senior
boys came third in the "best
overall" as they all did so
well.
Students are preparing for
their upcoming Hallowe'en
dances. One dance will be for
the Grades 4, 5 6 students,
while the senior Grade 7 and
8 students will hold their
own. Everyone will come in
costume and there will be
prizes awarded for several
categories including the
funniest, the most original,
and of course, the scariest.
The contest for guessing the
number of seeds in the great
pumpkin continues until
Friday, Hallowe'en, when the
number will be revealed.
