Herb Klassen, who has recently taken the reigns as principal, has had a teaching career that spanned the globe. He has taught in Holland, the Bahamas and he also worked as a counselor with the North American Treaty Organization. In addition, he has called England and Germany home. 47. Cards of Thanks TAYLOR Dan, Sherri, Emma and Owen would like to thank Dr. Salsbury and the exceptional staff at Clinton Public Hospital for all their help dur- ing Owen's birth. The love and warm wishes of family and friends during the pregnancy and since Owen's arrival make it ever more special. We are blessed to have such wonderful people in our lives. 47-44x1 Klassen's most recent gig was in Stratford, where he was vice-principal at Stratford Central Secondary School for two years. Before that, he was the vice-principal at Mitchell District secondary school. The transition to CHSS has been a pleasant one, he says. "The students here are friendly and well behaved," he says. "They're here to learn." He says staff members have been equally cooperative. Indeed, he says the system currently in place is well organized and will require few changes. "Any changes that will be made will be small and over time," he says. "There isn't anything we have to fix." Still, Klassen has a number of goals planned for the year, including a plan to boost student scores in the provincially mandated literacy and math tests. He says last year's scores were around the Ontario average, but he would like to see them rise above it. He adds there are also a NETWORK CLASSIFIEDS "Advertise Across Ontario or Across the Country" Do you know a young person (aged 6-17) involved in worthwhile community service, contributing while living with a limitation or performing an act of heroism? Sheila Jankowski (left) is the new vice-principal and Herb Klassen is the new principal. number of "new, young teachers" on staff, who are enthusiastic about facing challenges in the coming year. Sheila Jankowski, the new vice-principal, says it is like a homecoming as she started her teaching career at CHSS and has lived in the area for 20 years. Jankowski, who most recently held the position of vice-principal in Mitchell, echoes Klassen's sentiments about both the staff and students. "Everyone is agreeable and easygoing," she says. "The students are well-behaved and you find the students are doing what they're supposed to be doing." She notes students have also been receptive to the few changes made thus far. Jankowski says the main goal is to provide students with a safe and nurturing environment in which to learn. And, like her peer, Jankowski also spent some time teaching overseas as she taught English as a second language for two years in Malaysia. "I think we benefited from the experience more than the students did," she said.
