belongs to the Brussels

the biweekly card parties in
Ethel at 4he community
centre.
What inspired you to run
for office in Huron East?
I am presently a councillor
with Huron East for Grey
ward. There are a number of
things we arc working on
now and would like to see
Huron East work better as a
whole.
What are the personal
strengths and experience
you bring to the job of
municipal representative?
Having been a councillor
and deputy reeve for the last
12 years, I feel I have
experience to bring to the
table. I enjoy working with
and helping people with their
problems and concerns.
What are the greatest
challenges you see facing
your ward? Huron East?
How do you plan to meet
them if elected?

our ward: with ballooning

taxes because of it, so it is
important to keep any
increases to a minimum.
Huron East: daycare -
whether to fund it or not and
if we do fund it, how to do it
fairly between the three
centres.
How do you plan to
ensure that council and its
committees, such as the
Seaforth community
development trust, operate
in as public and
accountable a fashion as
possible?

in the community
Dale Newman has lived in
Grey for 27 years with his
wife Carmie and three
children. He has been
employed by Bell Canada for
33 years. He has experience
as councillor of Grey
Township for three years and
10 years and member of the
Brussels, Morris and Grey
recreation board for 10 years,
six of which he was chair. He
is past zone chairman of the
North Lions Club and a past
member of the Brussels,
Morris and Grey medical
dental board for 12 years.
His goals are to be the
voice of ratepayers in Grey
on Huron East council and to
see tax dollars raised in Grey

vuzg while suspended
A 61 -year-old Huron East was charged with driving while
suspended after he was stopped by police during a seatbelt
inspection in Brussels on Oct. 1 at 11 a.m.
The man; who was driving a red 1996 Chrysler, was found
to have been suspended for the past 19 years for previous
offences.
He is scheduled to attend court in Wingham on Nov. 20.

recreation board and we have
always made minutes and,
meetings open and available
to the public. Whenever we
had to make a capital
purchase we have to go
before council. Maybe the
new council of Huron East
should revisit the
arrangements with the
Seaforth community
development trust fund and
direct them to run it like the
Brussels trust fund. which
has been very open from the
start.
Huron East has been
grappling with a deficit
from the Thckersmith Day
Nursery and with a concern
about providing support to
daycare centres throughout
the municipality. What are
your views about the
municipality's responsiblity
in regards to daycare?
I think daycare should be
run more like user pay. Since
we have families using the
service from outside Huron
East, it would help address
that. If council decides to
fund daycare in any way, we
must treat the thress centres
the same.
What are your views
about how well
amalgamation is working
for Huron East? How
would you seek to improve
the situation?
We were all used to doing
things our own way so we
have had some growing pains
as we started doing things
together. I feel amalgamation
is working and will only
improve as bugs are ironed
out. As for improving things,
we have just went through an
organizational review and we
are now starting to act on the
recommendations from that
review.
What are your views
about economic
development in Huron
East? Are you satisfied with
the direction Huron East is
going in attracting new
businesses and promoting
what the area has to offer?
I was very much against
economic development in the
beginning. I felt the urban
areas would benefit from it
most so therefore, they
should pay the lion's share of
the cost. However, I can see
where we all win with
increased exposure of our
area.
Van Egmond tour
continues for
third Halloween
Strange noises, lights
shining through windows at
night or perhaps a ghost
sighting — it is not certain what
to expect at the Van Egmond
House on Halloween night.
Those spooky points are part
of the many stories people will
hear at the third annual
haunted house tour at the
historic Van Egmond house in
Egmondville on Oct. 31, said
Jean Fox, a volunteer with the
Van Egmond Foundation.
In the same tradition the
haunted tour has been ran the
past two years, Fox said
volunteers will lead groups
through the house by lantern at
different times, . sharing
historical stories and tales
dating back to when the house
was built in 1846.
"There are no decorations,
special effects or people
jumping out of rooms. We
simply want to entertain
people," she said.
Despite rumours of Colonel
Anthony Van Egmond
haunting the two-storey home
his son Constant Van Egmond
built, Fox said it is unlikely
visitors will see the Colonel

"There will always be the
odd story or rumour of a ghost
in the Van Egmond House but
our tour is not intended to
scare people," she said.
Fox said the main attractions
on the haunted house tour is a
holding cell in basement.
"Everyone gets a kick out of
the old cellar in the basement
so that's where we try to end
the tour," she said.
Last year, Fox said 112
visitors went through the Van
Egmond haunted house tour
and this year she expects to see
more.
"Since we started, we have
had more and more people
come through the house so this
year, we're hoping for a large
crowd," she said.
The tour begins at 8:30 p.m.
and children must be
accompanied by an adult.
There is a $2 charge for
admission.
