challenges we confront in the 21st century, without our
leisure. Things change, but some threads of endurance
weave a fabric of character that marks Huron County, as
possibly most of human culture.
When I look into the lives of my grandmothers and
fathers, I am filled with a deep respect for their courage and
inner strength to endure not only the arduous task of
settlement, but the continual loss of life in birth and sweet
youth (so poignantly preserved in the historical society's
transcriptions of the settler's cemeteries, gathered by the
schools' children.)
Our generations today may know more of the world
beyond the Queen's Bush than they did, but they tell a story
that reveals the Wisdom we are ever searching --or fleeing.
We not only hold their legacy --we are their legacy and most
precious.

Host information night planned for Nov. 6
From Page 4
There are many benefits and rewards to be gained from
hosting a child and a wonderful learning experience for our
own children.
Host families may request a child, boy or girl, who they
think would be best suited to fit in easily to their family life.
They are invited to attend an information meeting on
Thursday, Nov. 6 at 7:30 p.m. at Huron Centennial School
library, Brucefield to learn more about the program.
For more information please call Lynn Dawe at 527-2060.

Wait for trust's
financial report
adds $2,000
to auditor's fees
From Page 1
"The trust is going through some growing pains and has
done a lot of good things. But, I didn't know if I was out of
line when I called the treasurer and couldn't get the
information. My next step (after consulting the lawyer) would
have been a letter to the mayor," he said.
Meyer told council that without the wait for the Seaforth
trust's financial information, he would have been at council to
present his auditor's report in July and estimated that the
hold-up added $1,500 to $2,000 to the costs of his services.
"Time is always money and there was extra time in
waiting," he said.
Mayor Lin Steffler said she'd like to sit down with
members of the Seaforth trust and tell them the concerns of
the municipality's auditor.
"The slick and easy way to deal with this is to indicate that
this is a concern that our auditors have," she said.
Meyers agreed saying that the current set-up is "just the tail
wagging the dog."
Seaforth Coun. Bill Teall, who sits on the trust along with
Burgess, asked Meyers when he would like to see the trust's
financial information.
"(Huron East Deputy -Clerk) Brad (Knight) would like to
see it done in February or March but I'd like totry again in
early May. I'd like to be done (the audit) by June," Meyers
answered.
Businesses lose
customers because
merchants don't care,
says entrepreneur
From Page 1
Prevost said retailers
need to create a
entertainment part of their
business, with promotions
and advertisements such as
customer appreciation
events and recognizing
special events like
Halloween by dressing up.
"Have fun, be:
outrageous, love your
customers and strive to be
the best," he said.
Retailers also need to
have product knowledge,
said Prevost, by
determining who they are
and what business they are
in. He said retailers should
have connection to self,
connection to, employees,
connection to colleagues
and connection to
customers.
"If you have trouble
defining your business,
then how will you know
who your customers are?"
he asked.
Prevost said the next
economy is "The Baby
Boomers," as every 10
seconds in North America,
someone turns 50.
"There is no small
business economy; it's a
world econcimy. And, if
you think that's bad wait
until the on-line shoppers
come in," he said.
Why businesses lose
customers, Prevost said, is
because one per cent die,
-three per cent move away,
five per cent follow a
friend's advice, nine per
cent switch for price or
better product, 14 per cent
switch due to product or
service dissatisfaction and
68 per cent switch because
of indifference from the
merchant.
Prevost said retailers
should follow the 20/80
rule of 20. per cent of the
customers do 80 per cent
of the retailer's business
and 20 per cent of the
merchandise equals 80 per
cent of the sales.
He said smaller retailers
need to raise their
standards regarding
customer service and focus
on the positive elements of
their business.
"Customer satisfaction is
overrated: customer
loyalty is priceless," he
said.
