for work as Agriculture Minister
Huron farmers anticipate good relationship with incoming Steve Peters
By Sara Campbell

The Huron federation of
Agriculture honoured
outgoing Huron -Bruce MPP
Helen Johns last week while
anticipating a good
relationship with new
Agriculture Minister Steve
Peters.
"As an agriculture critic he
will be the best minster
coming and we are looking
forward to working with
him," said Neil Vincent,
president of the Huron
Federation of Agriculture.
Vincent along with Steve
Thompson, past president of
the HFA, honoured the
outgoing agriculture minister
Helen Johns at the Huron
Federation of Agriculture
meeting on Oct. 23 at the
Seaforth Agriplex.
"A lot of ministers would
hide behind their staff but she
was upfront. If she needed
advice, she would call," said
Thompson."We've had the
opportunity to share her
talents with the rest of
Ontario and we are thankful
for the work she has done."
Johns told Huron
federation members she is
thankful to have been an
MPP for the people of
Huron -Bruce and had the
pleasure to serve the province
as a minister.
"It hasn't always been a
stressful job, but I didn't
come here to talk about
agriculture — I came here for
the friendships I have made.
"I've learned a lot about
nutrient management — not
because of my agricultural
background but because of
the people I know. I have
also served with many people
here on the Agricultural
Commodity Committee," she
said.
"From my family, we're
very grateful to be moving on
and I thank everyone here. I
am proud to have served
you."
However, Johns refused to
discuss her political career as
Agriculture Minister further
with the Huron Expositor
following the meeting.
Vincent said the OFA will
be looking to Peters to play a
leading role in negotiations
with the federal government
to secure adequate safety net
programs. He added that they
will be also calling on the
new minister to promote
changes in the Land Transfer
Tax system and the retain
Sales Tax program.
Peters, the MPP for the
Elgin -Middlesex -London and
the new agriculture minister,
riding was sworn into
Premier Dalton McGuinty's
cabinet, on Oct. 23, with
other minister of the
province's new Liberal
government.

Agriculture believes "is a
good sign" for area farmers.
"It has to be a plus for the
riding with Carol being in
the agricultural sector. So I
think she will be a good
representative and strong
voice for us farmers," said
Neil Vincent, president of
the Huron Federation of
Agriculture.
Mitchell was sworn into

Outgoing Agriculture Minister Helen Johns received the Huron
County Federation of Agriculture Contribution to Agriculture
award from president Neil Vincent Thursday in Seaforth.
"Hard to tell what a new
government will do but all
the federation presidents will
be meeting with the new
minister soon and hopefully
we're all addressing the same
issues or singing from the
same song book," said
Vincent.
"There are those who did
not get compensated as much
as they should have during
the the BSE crisis and we
will also be looking to ensure
adequate funding is made
available to support farmers
as they work to meet the
requirements of the Nutrient
Management regulations."
He said.
"However, (Peters) is in a
new government and he may
be a little restricted in getting
funding we heed now."
