Arena board makes changes
to reduce $40,000 deficit

While it's expecting a $40,000 deficit at the end of this year,
the Seaforth arena board is planning to reduce its deficit over
2003 by $20,000.
"We're on target now to deal with the deficit in two years. We
identified it as a problem early and we're in a situation to deal
with it," said arena board chair Ron Lavoie on Friday, following
a budget meeting of the arena board.
"We've taken a hard look at the numbers and believe getting
rid of the deficit is attainable. At the end of the year, there will
still be a deficit but it should be gone in two years," he said.
Lavoie said the arena plans a zero per cent increase in
municipal contributions to the arena, a three per cent increase in
facility rental fees in 2003.
Other ways to combat the deficit include implementing a
rental fee for users of the facility that aren't presenting charged,
including groups like the Seaforth Agricultural Society, seniors'
shuffleboard and moms and tots skating.
"We may just put in a cash box and ask for donations from the
seniors and the moms," he said.
As well, Lavoie said labour costs will be reduced with a
reduction in staff hours and the transfer of one staff person
during four to five summer months to Huron East's parks
department.
The arena staff will also be looking for ways to attract more
use of the facilities during off -hours during the day.
"When the ice is in and the facility is operating, there is a
significant number of hours from Monday to Friday daytime
when the ice sits idle but we still have associated costs because
most bookings are for the weekends and evenings. The bottom

line is promoting the use of the facility and maximizing that," he
said.
"There are a lot of non -prime time hours. Maybe there are
seniors' skating programs that could be offered," Lavoie said.
