Former NHLer Dave McLlwain is playing for the third year in Cologne, Germany, after winning the championship of the German Elite League last year. "He told me the celebration in Germany was just like Toronto had won the Stanley Cup," says Nesbitt. Detroit Red Wing Boyd Devereaux brought the Stanley Cup to Seaforth this summer and continues to play, after a short time off the ice with a broken thumb this fall. Scott Driscoll is in his ninth year as a linesman with the NHL. "Last year, he was one man away from his Stanley Cup, officiating at the finals," says Nesbitt. NHL player Rem Murray was traded last week from the New York Rangers to the Nashville Predators after being traded last spring to the Rangers from the Edmonton Oilers. Before leaving Edmonton, Murray skated in 69 Oiler games, scoring seven goals and 17 assists for 24 points and appeared in his 400th NHL match on Jan. 23 against Colorado, according to his statistics on the New York Rangers' website. He skated in 11 games for New York, scoring one goal and two assists. His first goal was against Tampa Bay on April 1. Rem also became a dad over the summer with the birth of his daughter Jillian. Mike Watt signed a contract in early July with the Lowell Loch Monsters, a. farm team of the Carolina Hurricanes. His mom Barb says that Mike has had a lot of injuries lately, with pulled muscles under his ribs taking him out of the game for two weeks recently. "He's back playing again now," she says. Dan Wildfong is in his fourth year with the Bossier - Shreveport Mudbugs, of the Central Hockey League, a farm team for both the Rochester Amerks and the Buffalo Sabres. A month ago, he was the CHL's player of the week, says Nesbitt. Derek Nesbitt, 20, is playig in his sophomore year for Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan. His team is currently in firsi place in their conference, the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. "Derek is third in league scoring at the moment and leads the league in game - winning goals," says his dad Graham. The Ferris State team is scheduled to hold a practice in Seaforth on Jan. 2 at 1 p.m. on their way to Niagara Falls University in New York . "Everyone will get a chance to see a division one team practice," says Nesbitt. Four young women from Seaforth are playing university hockey this year: Nicole Munro, 20, is in her senior year at the University of Maine, playing hockey with their women's team, the Black Bears. As a forward, she'4 scored two goals and one assist this year so far. "She's had some challenges this year but it's still been a good year. They've been on the road a lot so it's been challenging to get the school work done," says her mom Janet. While Nicole is in her last year at school, she and some teammates are exploring playing hockeyfor some women's teams in Europe. "Her name has been made available to them. If she plays, she'd billet with a family and get paid to play hockey. It would be a great education if nothing else," says Janet. Janet credits Seafoth ringette with Nicole's success in hockey. "She played ringette because girls' hockey wasn't available but ringette gave her very strong skating skills, which is good background for hockey," she says. Kim Devereaux, is a sophomore at the University of Toronto, playing defence on the women's hockey team, the Varsity Blues. "They have a strong team, a really good club," says Nesbitt. "Kim is having a good year," says her mom Lynn. "They've only lost once this year to McGill University in Montreal." Lynn says the family is able to get to Kim's games when she plays Western in London or Laurier University in Waterloo. Last year, the women's Varsity Blues came third in the nationals. Kathy Devereaux is in her sophomore year with the Wisconsin Badgers, which is in fourth place in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association right now with nine wins, four losses and three ties. As a forward, Kathy has made two goals and five assists and played all 16 games this season so far. Jessica Finlayson is in her second year with the Windsor. Lady Lancers and also works at the Seaforth Hockey School in the summer doing off -ice training. And, while she's still in Grade 11 at St. Anne's Secondary School in Clinton, Leah Craig is playing with the London Junior Stangs, a team in the Southwestern girls' hockey league. "She's the second youngest on her team at 16 and was asked to try out for the Ontario Under 18 elite girls' team that goes to the Canada Winter Games," says Nesbitt. While she's too young yet to be offered a university scholarship, Leah has received letters of interest from schools all over the United States. "She really looks to the girls from Seaforth playing at universities in both Canada and the United States. She wants. to sit down with them and figure out what to do next year," says Fran. Leah is the second highest scorer on the Junior Stangs and also plays on the St. Anne's girls' hockey team.
