Promat Ltd. 40 Birch St., Seaforth, ON 527-0397 Huron East gets go-ahead to use Chalk Street well in emergency By Susan Hundertmark Expositor Editor Huron East has received the go-ahead from both the Ministry of the Environment and the Huron County Health Unit to put the Chalk Street well back on line temporarily in case of an emergency. "At least we know we're not going to be without water now," said Huron East's Public Works Coordinator John Forrest. "They're saying there's no short-term risk to using the well and that's what we wanted to know." A press release from the health unit Friday says that recent retesting of the Chalk Street well shows continued elevated levels of radium and uranium and the well will remain off line until plans to lower or eliminate the radium and uranium have been approved by the MOE and put into place. "The ministry's water standards section has advised that there should not be any significant risk with using the Chalk Street well for up to two weeks at a time," says the press release. In late October, routine testings of the Seaforth wells uncovered radon gas, a radioactive element, in the Chalk Street well. Shortly afterwards, the Welsh Street well - Seaforth's only operating well at present - was found to have surface water coming into the well through cracks in the well. In order to study the best ways to deal with the Welsh Street well's problems, Forrest has said it might have to be closed, causing a need for the Chalk Street well to be used by the community. "We will declare an emergency if we have to put it (the Chalk Street well) on line but we don't know if we'll have to do that yet," he said. The press release adds that the public will be notified by radio and television if the Chalk Street well must be put back on line. Forrest said the municipality's water provider American Water Services and consultants Water and Earth Sciences are working on a terms of reference containing possible options and action plans for both the Chalk and Welsh Street wells. He said he expects council to have a copy of the terms of reference at its Jan. 7 meeting. Every day she tops off where the chapter is financially, but there is still a ways to go. "What I need now is for people to make a donation to the United Way," she said. "We've just hit the 51 per cent mark of our goal," Huron United Way executive director Vicky Piluke said recently, adding that it is very important to continue the drive to reach their goal. Piluke said last year, the Huron United Way did not reach its target of $200,000 and saw a cut in funding to HURON EAST NtePr WINTER. This year, she hopes that won't happen because the effect on people using or working with those agencies is quite profound. "The impact of that (funding cuts), is that one•in three people (in Huron) will know or have direct contact with someone who uses those agencies," Piluke said. She stressed the importance of donations to the United Way this year to prevent another cut. The Huron United Way is also relying on its campaigns including the Payroll Deduction program, Coats for Kids and Day of Caring to help carry them through to the final goal, Piluke said. Piluke said large companies like Sifto Salt Ltd. in Goderich and Kraft Canada in Exeter have also pledged to hold fundraisers on behalf of the Huron United Way — with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to the Huron chapter. Piluke said these fundraisers include a variety of dedicated participants from workers to unions to management. "This is not just a management participation in the United Way," she said. Piluke said the Huron United Way determines its goals based on volunteers who talk with the 13 members agencies and determine what each agency requires in terms of funding. And when that is set out, it's the generous donations of people that make the difference in whether or not the Huron United Way meets its goals, she said. "It's the individual that makes the difference," Piluke said, adding she is very pleased and appreciative of the people, especially those on fixed income, who make regular donations time and time again. So now it's just a matter of getting the remainder of the money needed to reach the annual goal in place, Piluke said. "It's important that we go over the top," she said. Piluke said the Huron chapter uses a large replica of a thermometer to indicate the _HEALTH ON THE HILL_ A Review of activities at SEAFORTH COMMUNITY HOSPITAL "Season's Greetings to everyone as we quickly approach the Christmas season."
