Canadian Alliance may win Huron -Bruce riding
It's only a matter of time before voters start looking for an alternative to the Liberals, says Jahn
By Clint Hoggart
Clinton News Record Staff
The Huron -Bruce riding is within the grasp
of the Canadian Alliance Party, members
were told at their recent annual meeting in
Holmesville.
It's only a matter of time before voters start
looking for an alternative to the federal
Liberal Party, said Nancy Jahn, first vice-
president of National Council for the
Canadian Alliance.
Jahn told two stories of
MPs who won in supposedly
unwinnable ridings.
The first, she said, was an
employee of Clyde Wells
before he became premier of
Newfoundland. She said the
candidate was unsure how
much effort he should put in
his campaign because he was
running in a Liberal -
controlled riding.
According to Jahn, Clyde
Wells gave the man leave and
told him, "If you're going to do it,
right."
The man proved that the riding could be
won, she said.
The second story she shared was about a
candidate who won running against the
Liberals, in a riding that has been Liberal
controlled since confederation.
Jahn said she likes to ask people how they
became members of the Canadian Alliance or
Reform Party.
One man told her he joined by attending a
meeting he saw advertised in a newspaper.
The five people at the meeting eventually
became the founders of the party in the
Pembroke riding.
"It's amazing, the small beginning that
would produce so much success," Jahn said.
Even Steven Harper, leader of the
Canadian Alliance Party, told her he was
drinking coffee at a meeting in Orillia where
the Reform Party was formed in that area.
"No party can match our numbers or our
passion for Canada," Jahn said. "From the
smallest seedcan grow an oak tree."
Members of the Canadian Alliance Party,
said Jahn, have a
responsibility to stand on
guard for Canada.
The nation is sinking into
mediocrity, Jahn said, adding
the country needs to correct its
course after taking a wrong
turn in the Trudeau years.
Until Trudeau, Canada had
the finest military and the
dollar was worth more than
the American dollar, she said.
"Your job," she told Huron-
BruceJahn members, "is to elect a
Canadian Alliance MP, one of
150, so we can change Canada."
Canadian Alliance members, she said, have
been beating themselves up for not winning in
the last election.
She said she doesn't believe winning
conditions existed for the party in Ontario last
time.
When the Reform Party, which eventually
became the Canadian Alliance Party, formed
in Western Canada, Jahn said voters had
rejected the Liberals and the Progressive
Conservatives and had no other choice.
"Ontario voters were not ready to kick the
Liberals out," Jahn said. "They will. Your job
Nancy
do it
is to be ready to elect a Canadian Alliance
MP in your riding."
She said Ontario voters, who always
decide the election will eventually set their
eyes on the Canadian Alliance Party.
She said the party needs well respected and
articulate candidates who have paid their dues
in the community.
Local parties also need to develop their
own policies, she said, adding, "Maybe Kyoto
doesn't matter here, some other issue does."
In a riding like Huron -Bruce, she
suggested basing policy on agricultural issues.
She added she understands money is a
problem for smaller groups but there are
many things the riding can use, such as
technology.
"Good organization can not win an
election, but bad organization can lose an
election," she said.
Earlier in her career, Jahn said she was
studying the effects of regionalism on the
unity of the country and travelled extensively.
"I fell in love with my country. It's never left
me.
"That's the thing we have in common. We
have passion for Canada."
Huron East farmer seeks
nomination for NDP riding
By Jennifer Jackson

Brussels -area farmer Ross Hemingway
hopes to continue a family tradition by
seeking the nomination for the Huron -Bruce
NDP riding in the next provincial election.
Hemingway announced his decision at the
Huron -Bruce New Democratic Party's annual
general meeting in Lucknow on Nov. 21.
"I wanted a new challenge, to try
something new," said Hemingway.
"The opportunity came up when I
relinquished some other positions, giving me
some extra time."
Hemingway's father represented the NDP
party federally in the early 1960s.
He feels that his experience ,as a farmer and
union representative for Air Canada Jazz
(formerly Air Ontario) will be beneficial if he
is nominated.
"There's more similarities between farming
and unions than most people would like to
admit," said Hemingway.
"In being involved with both I have a better
idea about the problems that will arise and
different ways to deal with them."
A date for the nomination meeting will be
set at the party's next meeting in late
December or early January.
As of yet, Hemingway said he didn't know
who else, if anyone, would also be seeking
nomination.
"Basically I was announcing that I am
interested in seeking the nomination and
when I find out the date of the meeting, I'll
start talking to people to get support," he
explained.
Hemingway said there have been rumours
that the election will be sometime next
