Letter
helps
water bill
discussion
Thanks to a recent letter
from Elly Schoonderwoerd,
Huron East council now has
a better understanding of the
water billing situation.
"My husband (the late
Tom Schoonderwoerd) and I
wanted only a simple,
consistent and equal water
billing system for all, thereby
encouraging conservation,"
explained Schoonderwoerd
in her letter that was
presented to council during
their Dec. 10 meeting.
"We felt this could only be
achieved by implementing
water meters for all." -
Prior to amalgamation, the
Schoonderwoerds and other
landlords were charged a flat
rate of $15 a month for water
used in their building if they
didn't have water meters.
Now they're charged $15 for
each unit.
"She brought the issue to
our attention and her
comments will have a
bearing on our discussions,"
explained Huron Fast Clerk -
Administrator Jack
McLachlan during an
interview on Friday.
Tuckersmith Coun. Larry
McGrath reminded council
Tuesday night that he had
previously mentioned this
change in billing, but there
was no further discussion on
the issue.
McLachlan said Friday
that he is currently in the
process of creating new
water rates, but doesn't know
yet if the landlord billing will
be changed.
Investigations began into
the issue of water metering
last March when
Schoonderwoerd's husband
and other local landlords
upset with a billing system
they felt was unfair to tenants
attended a Huron East
council meeting to voice
their concems.
Schoonderwoerd also
suggested in her letter that if
there had been more water
meters during the summer, a
water ban may not have been
necessary.
