CLATWORTHY • GRANTON Hensall Mr. Lee Redden, of St. Catharines, visited oyer the `week -end in town. A number from town took in the celebration in Clinton, on Monday last, Miss Hattie McQueen, of New York is• visiting relatives and friends in town. Mrs. Lou Simpson and daughter Mae are visiting this week at Grand Bend, Miss Florence Welsh, of- London, visied over the week -end with hor parents here. A large number from town took in the Ford picnic at Bayfield on Wednesday last, - A number of our citizens are and Bayfieldholi- . holi- daying at Grand Bend for -the summer months. Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Cook and family left last week for their sum- mer home at Grand Bend. Mr. Wm. Higgins, of Clinton, has been here for some days helping to wait on his mother, Mrs.' Easton, Miss Margaret Stelek, of Dauphin, Manitoba, is visiting her relatives, Mr. and Mrs. E. Rennie and family. Miss Helen Elder, who has been spending a two week's vacation at her home here has returned to Lon- don. Mrs. Sidney Clark and children are here visiting Mr. and Mrs. J. Young, of the New Commercial, Mrs., Clark's parents. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Penhale,' of Ex- eter, were in town on Monday visit- ing Mr. Penhale's sister, Mrs. Elston who is critically ill. The garden party held on the :awn of Mr Jas. A.. Bell, London Road, was largely attended, and every one had a fine time. Miss Irma Rennie, of Detroit, is home and will spend a few weeks visiting at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. Ranne. Miss Margaret and Geneva Petty, of Moose .Jew, Sask., •are spending the summer months at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John McLean and faika- ily. Miss Gladys Slay, of Sarnia,` was the guest of Miss Greta Laramie over the week -end and sang a solo in the United church on Sunday evening. A severe wind storm passed over Hensall on Friday afternoon last but did not do much . damage, and the good rains on Saturday and Monday were very welcome Mr. John Fluker gave a picnic to Grand Bend to a number of his friens and relatives on Monday last. A large number from Michigan, Au- burn and Hensall attended and had an enjoyable time. Music examinations were conducted in Clinton on July 5th. Miss Greta Lammie's pupils who tried were Ir- ma. Workman, Elementary piano and Marion Sinclair, elementary school piano. Mrs. C. L. Newton . and little clan - of London, have returned Home after visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. I. Wilkinson. Master Harry, returned with.. thein, having visited for the past three months with his grasdparents. Mr. Erastus Rennie accompanied by Mr. George Brown, left here the middle of this week for a motor trip and holiday to the M'uskoka district and no doubt will have a fine time. The only thing to be considered is how Hensall is to get along even for a comparatively short time without two of lits oldest enterprising men, who very seldom . are absent flout their posts and their many friends wish theme 'very enjoyable time. No. 222 for the incoming term on Tuesday evening of last week, and on Tuesday of this week installed the officers of Exeter Lod- ge, and on the following Wednesday those of Seaforth. So it will be seen the good work is going on lively and we believe they are doing the work in a very satisfactory manner, Both the Liberal and Consrva- tive executives of South Huron held committee meetings here on Friday evening last n the Town Hall (need- less to say they had seperate rooms) The Conservatives of South Huron. are holding a convention here on July 22 to nominate a candidate for the House of Commons. A number of prominent 'speakers will be pres- ent. The Liberals will hold their con- vention on Tuesday, July 27th. I COUNCIlealEETING The regular meeting of the noun- cil was held on Saturday evening, July 10th. The first Tuesday of each month is the regular night lint owing to the absence of Reeve Gieg- er who is a member of the Criminal Justice Audit Board of the County who was absent at Goderich, the meetingwas postponed till Saturday night. The Reeve and three council- lors were present, councillor Robert Higgins being absent on account of sickness in his home. The minutes of the last meeting were read and adopted. Mr. Milton Love was pres- ent and interviewing the council as to a ditch in front of his property. The council promised to look into the matter. Mr. John Coulter was pres- ent and asked the council to move the light on his street some 30 feet as he claimed the trees blocked the light. The council promised to look into the matter. Mr. Wm. Pfaff was j also present and interviewed the ( council as to compelling the removal of all gas tanks from the streets and complained of unfair , competition. He suggested taking the matter up with the Railway Board and thought 'filet would be the best way to settle the matter. Cook Bros. asked per- mission to put another gas pump in front of their property, but the coun- cil thought it advisable not to issue any more permits for gas pumps on the street, until the gas men came to some working agreement among themselves Clerk Murdock who was appointed by the Higgins motion of May 4th to interview the merchants in town as to closing their places of business on open nights at eleven o'clock, said he had interviewed the different merchants in town, • but could get no working agreement from them. Most being in favor of closing earlier, but others would not. Reeve Gieger who was a member of the committee appointed May 4th by the Higgins motion as to better fire protection said that the committee had done nothng yet, but had made arrangements to visit Ingersoll and Woodstock and see the different makes of fire engines and what would be most suitable for Hensall. A very interesting and grimly con- tested game cif'Baseball was played on the athletic field here on Mon- day evening between the Zurich and Crediton teams, The Zurich team got off to a good start but the Cred- iton team gave hot chase and play- ed one of their best games of the season to the delight of the spect- ators. The Junior and Senior Young Peoples' Societies will . omit the re- gular devotional and literary pro- gram of their organization next Fri- day evening and enjoy an evening of athletic sports on the community grounds.
