Short engagement was positive experience
By Sarah Caldwell
Having a short
engagement is definitely
recommended by one
Goderich bride who
planned her wedding in
two months.
Ginni (nee Rodges) and
Jason Buttar were married
on December 30, 2000.
They were engaged earlier
in the year on July 1, and
originally set their
wedding date for a year
later on June 30, 2001.
Then at the end of
October they decide to
pull a fast one on
everyone and decided to
get married on December
30, instead.
A couple of turns in

in a short time.
events led to the earlier
date including Ginni's
parents, who are
missionaries in Papa New
Guinea and wanting to
return to their post. At the
same time, many of the
places they wanted to
book were also already
booked for the date they
wanted.
There turned out to be
many advantages to
bumping up the date.
There was no problem
booking the church, the
hall was available and it
was no problem to book a
photographer, said Ginni.
The only downfall is a
couple of people couldn't
come to the wedding
because it was busy for
them around Christmas
time or because of the
distance.
It wasn't a small
wedding to pull off in only
two months either.
The couple had a full
church wedding with 200
guests and had four people
standing up with them on
each side of the wedding

There was so much help

Live Christmas trees provided the backdrop for the winter wedding of Ginni and

from the family that it was
easy to delegate people to
help out, said Ginni. Using
the talents of family and
friends also helped to cut
down the costs of the
wedding.
All of the bridesmaids,
Ginni's four sisters, had
their dresses made by her
mom, an aunt and her
grandmother. Another
aunt made the wedding
cake and a family friend,
who is also a florist, did
all the decorating at the
church and made all the
wedding flower
arrangements using real
flowers.
Ginni's mom, sisters
and a friend sang at the
wedding.
Friends pitched in to
serve coffee and dessert to
guests between the
ceremony and reception.
Family looked after
entertainment at the
reception and there wasn't
a dance.
The major expense were
the meal and the pictures.
With a two month
engagement you have to
do everything faster.
Many people get
engaged for a year but
only start to work on the
wedding for the six
months before the big day
comes. Everyone has ideas
of what they want to do. A
short engagement is
definitely the way to go,
said Buttar.
"You may as well have
your wedding and be done
with it so there is no
stretching it out too long,"
said Buttar.
December also ended up
being a great month to get
married in because they
were able to luck out on
lots of deals along the way
that saved them money.
The wedding, being so
close to Christmas still had
a Christmas theme to it.
They were able to get live
Christmas trees from a
local retailer for free to
decorate the church with.
Mini -lights and seasonal
decorations were also
bought in Boxing Day
sales for greatly reduced
prices.
The couple were also
able to take advantage of
seasonal decorations
already in place such as
the Christmas lights on the
Square and the Christmas -
themed decor already at
the White Carnation in
Holmesville where the
dinner and reception was
held.
The groomsmen were
also able to get their tuxes
for $100 because they
were reduced for a New
Year's Eve.
Ginni bought her dress off
the rack so there wasn't a
problem with ordering a
dress and having it come
in on time.
She said if you demand
it from them, the bridal
stores will get a dress
ordered in two months,
not the six to eight months
they usually tell a bride.
I was the best man at
the wedding. If I was the
best man, why is she
marrying him?
