• Correspondents Band prepares for trip to Europe Several St. Columban area residents took advantage of the Valentine dinner and dance held St. Columban at Brodhagen this past weekend to get their Valentine into the mood for the big day. Many of the young people in the area enjoy broomball during the winter months and participate by playing on one of the local Seaforth league teams. Several area families attended the annual All Ontario Broomball Tournament held in Barrie this past weekend. The area teams included one peewee team, two bantam teams, two midget teams and one juvenile team. Teams from all over Ontario participated in this event. Gerard O'Reilly, Adam Koehler and teammates on the local juvenile team, the Seaforth Hitmen, made it to the final game. This team, who last year achieved the National Juvenile Broomball Championship for all of Canada, will travel to Manitoba in March to attend the nationals being held there. The sympathy of the community is extended to the family of former area resident, Leo Ryan, who died recently. Leo was born and raised in the area and farmed here some years ago. Involved in a number of enterprises in Kitchener, Leo was a man very involved with his family and community. The sympathy of the community is also extended to the family of another former area resident, Teresa Feeney, who died this past weekend. Teresa will be remembered for her hard work and devotion to family and community. A number of area young ladies, including Leanne, Heather and Kimberly Murray, are preparing to travel to Europe with the Seaforth Girls Band March 8 to March 16. They will be performing in London and Paris. Performances are planned at a football game at Reading; at the Parade Gardens at Bath; in the West Piazza at Covent Market Gardens; and at the Piazza Pompadou Center in Paris, France. They are looking forward to seeing some of the countryside. One of the tours planned is a visit to Vimy Ridge. The students at St. Columban School have been busy with several events. The two snow day holidays only postponed the planned ski trips to Cobble Hill and Chickopee, which were rescheduled. It's the time of year for brushing up on the public speaking skills once again. Each student is expected to participate by preparing a three minute speech on a topic of their own choosing. Then, two from each class will be chosen to present their speech at an assembly in the gym. Shrove Tuesday is coming up and will be marked with a pancake day. On Ash Wednesday the students will participate at Mass at St. Patrick's in Dublin. Valentine's Day will be celebrated by a dance for the Grade 6, 7 and 8 students, while the Grade 4 and 5 students will mark the day with a "Red, Pink and White Day." The students who have been fund raising for "Kevin's Cause," will see their efforts directed to the W. Ross Macdonald School for the Blind.
