Odds are split on a white Christmas By Matt Shurrie Goderich Signal -Star Staff Will it be a white Christmas? At this point that appears to be the million dollar question - one even experienced meteorologists arc having a tough time predicting. "If I were a bookie I would have to call it even," Environment Canada senior climatologist David Phillips said. The forecast is calling for light snow on Christmas Eve and continued light snow or snow showers on Christmas Day but it's too early to tell whether the ground will be' white or not. "At this point there is a better chance of a white Boxing Day than a white Christmas," Phillips said. ' Since the weather can't be predicted, Phillips said he likes to look at two factors at Christmas - a white Christmas where the ground is white but not necessarily filled with clean snow and the perfect Christmas where there is fresh snow in the air. For this area Phillips said there is a 76 per cent chance that it will be a white Christmas but only a 33 per cent chance that it will be a perfect Christmas. Contrast that with Santa's home at the North Pole where there is a 100 per cent chance of a white Christmas but only a 10 per cent chance of a perfect Christmas and Winnipeg, Canada's winter capital, where there is a 98 per cent chance of a white Christmas and an 11 per ccnt chance of a perfect Christmas. "I'd much rather be in Goderich than in Winnipeg," Phillips said of the better chances there will he a perfect Christmas. At this point Timmins appears to be the hot spot this winter where there is a 56 per cent chance of the weather producing a perfect Christmas. "First they have Shania Twain and now the perfect ,Christmas," Phillips said. "Everyone has to have some claim to fame." A system that produced a snow squall waming and some ground cover last Friday was expected to disappear over the weekend when milder temperatures and rain moved across the area. Phillips said local residents should expect colder air on Christmas Day meaning conditions will be better for fresh snow. But, he was quick to point out that it's hard to say whether Mother Nature will cooperate. "It's a little bit t(x) close to call," Phillips said. "We have to remember that the weather is never a sure thing."
