Blood transfusions keep Sutherland going

Bluewater's
cost will be

for Grand
Bend fire
department
The cost of fire service from the Grand Bend fire
department will increase by $752 next year as the
Municipality of Bluewater agreed to a new agreement for
2002.
Recently, council agreed to pay operating costs based on
assessment. Bluewater's total annual cost will be $6,002.
Cost based on assessment is cheaper than costs estimated
in two scenarios: the first scenario, adding the Grand Bend
service area to Dashwood's, would increase Bluewater's
cost by $61,490.50; scenario two, moving part of the area
into Dashwood and another part into Zurich, would
increase Bluewater's cost by $50,796.50.

From Pogo 1
shows you how many are
able to donate all the time.
What about the everyday
tragic events of four -year-
olds with cancer and 12 -year-
old hemophiliacs? People
need blood everyday," she
says.
Sutherland says she's been
put on waiting lists for blood
when she's needed
transfusions because blood
had to be shipped from
Toronto or there wasn't
enough in London to give her
a transfusion and leave
enough for emergency car
accidents.
"There are so many healthy
people out there who never
give blood because they're
afraid of a little pinprick. But,
when you're healthy, your
body produces blood so
easily and readily. You might
be a little tired the next day
but your body will
regenerate. I need your blood
because right now, my body
won't regenerate on its own,"
she says.
Sutherland says she's been
close to death twice and
blood transfusions have
helped in both cases.
Once while receiving a
chemotherapy treatment, she
began to hemorrhage and
needed three pints of blood to
recover.
Another time, she
developed pneumonia after
being exposed .to someone
else's case of the sniffles and
was close to death before
recovering. Because blood
transfusions strengthen her
immune system, she says
they help her fight whatever
bug is going around.
"This time of year with all
the cold and flu bugs going
around, I can't leave home
without wearing a mask. I
sleep better when I get blood
because then I'm riot afraid
of dying as much. A cold is
life threatening to me and
blood is an extra layer of
protection," she says.
Even with Sutherland's
encouragement and
sometimes even tours she'll
lead through the hospital to
see all the people who benefit
from donated blood, she says
it can be hard to convince
friends and family to donate
blood.
"Even some of my friends
won't donate because they
don't like needles and the
sight of blood and they can
see firsthand what I'm going
through. All it takes is 20
minutes out of your life and
it's mind-boggling to me that
people won't help," she says.
Sutherland's father, who
recently received his 50 -
donation pin, has been a
blood donor since she was a
child sitting on a chair beside
him at the clinic.
"It's something that's been
ingrained in me since I was a
little kid but I only got two
donations in at 18 before 1
was diagnosed with cancer,"
she says.
She recommends that
families give blood together,
taking children with them so
they can see it's not a
traumatic thing. Blood
donors must be at least 18 but
children can accompany
adults to the clinics.
"I know Christmas is a
busy time but make it a
family thing and go to the
blood donor clinic before you
sit down to your family
dinner. Make it the good deed
of the holidays. You give to
the food bank, so give to the
blood bank too," she says.
"Give me a Christmas gift
would you? You'll make my
Christmas much more
enjoyable since I'll be much
too tired and sick it I don't
get blood. And, you'll make
other people's Christmases
by saving lives," she says.

Ontario's Furniture Viffage
It's a great time to buy furniture from us!
Between Christmas and New Year's, hundreds of items in our store will be
re -priced ... many at cost! These are discontinued items,
floor models and manufacturers' specials.
Also, we are planning a major renovation of the Dublin Clockworks Co.
after the NEW YEAR. Many of our clocks and curios drastically reduced.
Frankly, we'd rather sell it than move it!
