Bureau bags
in newspapers
next week
to encourage
donations
The Huron County Christmas Bureau will get a boost next
week as community newspapers across the county again take
part in the Christmas bag program.
In next week's issue of The Huron Expositor, subscribers
will find a brown paper bag sponsored by this newspaper and
several businesses and industries.
Printed on the bag, along with sponsor information, are
details of where each of the county bureaus are located and
times gifts and food can be dropped off.
It also provides information for people who may need help
this Christmas on how to reach the bureau and register.
Each year, the bureau collects food and gifts that assist
more than 1,000 children and their families across the
county.
Karen Riddell of the bureau said the bag provides an
excellent way for people to collect food and gift items
together to bring them to the bureau and, when the
newspaper arrives with the bag, is a reminder of the bureau's
needs this year.
Of particular need are items for teenagers, often
overlooked by people who enjoy picking out children's toys
when thinking of donating to the bureau.
"It does mean a lot to us," said Riddell of the success of
the bag program, now in its fourth year.
Spearheaded by The Seaforth Huron Expositor and the
Seaforth Lions Club and Agricultural Society, newspapers
across the county joined forces to promote the use of the
bags.
Riddell said they have seen donations increase since the
bags have been used as people tend to try to fill them with
items of food, toys and gifts.
"It really does pay off," she said. "We want everyone to fill
them."
But Riddell also said financial contributions help as well,
allowing bureau managers to purchase items that may be
needed but weren't received in the bags or brought in to the
bureau locations.

Fewer families registered with Christmas bureau
With this year's number of
registered needy families in
the Seaforth area almost half
of last year's, local Huron
County Christmas Bureau
manager Laura Crawford is
wondering if there are still
families that need to register.
"Are there people out there
who haven't called yet who
are in need? The bureau will
take registrations up to Dec.
5," she says.
Located this year at Bethel
Bible Church, the Christmas
Bureau kicks off with a troop
New route
keeps
parade
downtown
While only 30 participants
have signed up to be part of
this year's Seaforth Santa
Claus Parade so far, organizer
Ross Ribey says he's
confident the usual 65 will
take part.
"We're expecting a good
turnout. Half the people in the
parade never sign up but just
show up that night," he says.
This year's parade, the
19th year to be hosted by the
Seaforth Lions Club, has a
changed route that will see
Santa end up downtown
instead of at the Agriplex.
A trailer located between
the CIBC and Flower Magic
will house Santa for his visits
with children after the parade.
The parade will also begin
at the Seaforth fairgrounds
and arena, travel south down
Main Street and finish at the
Bethel Bible Church, in the
opposite direction from last
year's parade.
Ribey says Santa was
moved to a downtown
location in hopes that people
will congregate downtown
after thc parade and possibly
do some more Christmas
shopping.
Hot dogs, coffee and hot
cider will also be offered by
the Optimist Club at a
downtown food stand.
As always, the Seaforth
District High School All -
Girls Marching Band will
lead thc parade with three
other bands from Kincardine,
Clinton and Milverton also
participating in the parade.
Several majorette groups are
also expected to participate.

Beginning Dec. 3 until
Dec. 7, the church will be
open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
for drop-offs of donations
and drop boxes are also
already located at Stedman's,
Sumthing Special and Huron
East's town hall.
Along with non-perishable
food donations, the bureau`is
looking for gifts of new toys
and clothing for children,
mostly for the age range of
five to 16.
"The kids being served are
getting older, we've been
told. Baby toys aren't needed
as much. We always need
things for teens like CDs,
alarm clocks or make-up,"
says Crawford.
Last year, the Christmas
Bureau served 36 families,
including 120 children in the
Seaforth area, while the
numbers so far locally are 14
families, including 36
children.
The number to call to
register for assistance is 1-
800-265-5198. Those
eligible must live in Huron
County and the person
registering the child must be
the custodial parent. A
connection with the
Children's Aid Society is not
necessary.
Along with Seaforth,
bureaus are also located in
Goderich, Clinton, Exeter
and Wingham.
Those needing assistance
or wishing to donate in
Brussels and northern Huron
East, can also contact the
Wingham bureau at St.
Paul's Anglican Church with
managers John and Barb
Kerr at 887-9253.
