HomeMy WebLinkAboutHuron Expositor, 2002-10-16, Page 1Agriculture THE HURON EXPOSITOR, October 31, 2001-13 Local farmers face year of many challenges: Regele nip past year has been one of many challenges. It has been team work that has brought us to this point. It took great effort and team work from all who participated in getting some hard -fought -for government assistance channeled through market revenue this spring. We see ourselves continuing to struggle for a solid base of enhanced levels of government assistance (a made in Ontario solution). Funded properly it should keep us from the need to lean on our Members of Provincial Parliament and Members of Parliament on the grain and oilseed issue. Also federally we continue to seek a domestic food policy. This would go a long way to ensuring the future of the family farm: This is what most everyone wants including the consumer. This is only possible if both levels of our government believes a domestic supply of food is in the best interest of this country. As we speak, many farmers have been forced to make the toughest decisions they have ever made. The problem has not developed overnight, nor will the solution be overnight. Provincially, red tape and delays slow up the development of new co- operatives and plans individual farmers have; a definite change in government attitude in land use policy; a look at other ways people can grow and expand without taking good agri land out of production. Small abattoir owners .know well of what I'm referring to about red tape. The future supply of stable and quality electricity for our farms seems to be a pen stroke away. The Ontario Federation of Agriculture tells us there is no rush for signing contracts at this time. Nothing as yet is written in stone for re - deregulation and there are still so many unknowns. The odourless Nutrient Management legislation is sure to keep us busy for some time. I hope this legislation will be workable, affordable and effective. Huron County Federation of Agriculture's position is we prefer Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs to enforce this because OMAFRA has the science, the expertise and the history in dealing with farmers. The Cruelty to Animals Bill is another federal issue that we will need to work at, if we want to continue taking care of our animals outside the courtroom. We are fully aware of those out there that would love to do away with animal agriculture. At the local level we see taxation issues and the need for some cracks in the systems to be filled. There are problems with dead stock removal and there are rendering issues. We need to support changes to the machinery act which will benefit all farmers.
