Smith Funeral Director News Huron East discussion fails to solve recycling issue in Tuckersmith By Scott Hilgendorff Expositor Editor While a discussion about blue box programs was supposed to help Huron East council determine whether or not to use such a program in Tuckersmith, little discussion was had about actually doing it. "Essentially what you are doing (with the current recycling bin) is the old form of recycling," said Francis Veilleux of the Bluewater Recycling Association (BRA). But he offered no financial reason not to use the recycling bins in Egmondville and Vanastra. Residents take their recyclable material to giant bins set aside for cans and bottles, newsprint and other collected material. However, there have been numerous complaints about the volume of regular garbage and items including furniture and television sets being dumped there as well, instead of beiig taken to the landfill site. Now, Veilleux said there is a tipping fee being added to the cost of the bin program because much of that waste is too dirty to be taken to the recycling plant and has to be taken to the landfill site anyway. Veilleux said the real reasons for going to a blue box program where recyclable material is collected at everyone's curbside is because it encourages proper recycling. "When they use blue boxes, it reminds people to use it," he said. Coupled with user -pay systems being used in most municipalities where residents pay for each bag of garbage they throw out, Veilleux said the blue box program helps greatly reduce the amount of material going into landfill sites, extending their use. Deputy Administrator Brad Knight said in Grey, people using the blue box program have helped extend the life of its landfill site from 2003 until 2017. But Brussels Coun. Greg Wilson said it's also pretty common knowledge that farmers burn and bury a lot of their garbage which, since Grey is a predominantly rural ward in Huron East, would attribute to some of the waste reduction in the landfill site. Veilleux and Knight both said promotion of the use of blue box programs has to be ongoing to help further encourage their use. Veilleux said that's one of the reasons why they don't just throw material into the garbage in areas using co -collection programs like Grey. Co -collection is another possible alternative for Tuckersmith where the BRA trucks collect both trash and blue boxes. But when someone puts material in a blue box that cannot be recycled, instead of putting it in the garbage side of the truck, they leave it at the curb with a note letting people know why it was not collected. Veilleuxsaid that is part of how they are trying to encourage and educate people on how to use the blue box program properly on an ongoing basis. "They are encouraged to learn what goes in the garbage and what does not," he said. The company offers school curriculums to help educate young recyclers and also helps out by offering hazardous waste collection days to help residents get rid of other troublesome products like left over paint.
