I want to take this time to remind us that the actions of good people can impact us and help shape our lives as well. Fiftoen years ago when our family resided in Seaforth, my wife Verna became seriously ill and survived many operations to have brain tumours removed. She required constant care, both medically and emotionally during her recuperation period. Alice Reid, a member of your community and head of the cancer committee at your hospital regularly arranged rides to and from London with many kind and wonderful volunteers for Verna's cancer treatments. Not only did she assist in providing the medical care that Verna so needed but also became a companion that submitted photo Alice Reid, of Seaforth, sits between former Seaforth residents Verna and Jim May during a trip to British Columbia.. Stratford anthrax scare found to be groundless A suspicious package with a white, powdery substance feared to be anthrax in Stratford last week was found to be harmless. And, Huron OPP say they've received no calls regarding anthrax concerns. The package received in the mail by a Rebecca Street resident in Stratford on Oct. 15 was tested and found to be a substance used to preserve the magazines she received. After the substance in question was sent to the Toronto Public Health Unit and tested to see if it contained the harmful anthrax bacteria, it was returned negative. The Rebecca St. resident was removed from her home while Stratford emergency services investigated her home and she was not permitted to return until it was deemed safe. The powdery- substance found in the package of magazines was used by the distributor to prevent the glossy pages of the magazines from sticking together. Huron OPP Sgt. Sean Johnson says people should be cautious but not panicky regarding the many anthrax scares throughout North America. "There's a fine line and you have to weigh the pros and cons. If you get suspicious mail, don't expose anyone else, throw it in the garbage, leave the area and ask for help. But, it's been totally quiet in Huron County," he says. Johnson says he wants to give a "clear message" that the police will not tolerate any pranks. "We will investigate and criminal charges will be laid," he says.
