Mitchell, says she won't be
hanging out her laundry
anymore this fall since
some ladybugs that got into
the family pajamas took a
few bites into her and her
husband recently. They
woke up the day after
laundry day with several
bites on their arms and
shoulders.
"I think there are 50
times. more ladybugs than
usual. You can't help
noticing them and they land
all over the clothing on the
line," she says.
Her neighbour Penny
Speer agrees that eight to
10 ladybugs can be found
on each piece of clothing
on her outdoor clothes line
and wonders if the
cornfield their houses back
onto is one of the reasons
for the large numbers of
ladybugs.
"They are a pain. They're
all over the house and I've
seen them trying to crawl
in under the sliding door. I
haven't seen them like this
any other year," she says.
Maegen Beuerman, who
lives near Family Paradise
Campground at Walton,
says her kitchen chandelier
was completely covered in
ladybugs and that sunny
days find ladybugs
covering her house's screen

door.
"We sprayed with Raid to
get rid of them," she says.
Deb Nariwonczyk, of the
London office of Abell Pest
Control, says she's just
starting to get calls from
the Huron -Perth area
during the past week, when
a typical day included 50
calls an hour from- across
southwestern Ontario
complaining of ladybugs.
"There is no pesticide for
ladybugs so we've just
been advising people to
vacuum them up," she says.
She says she's noticed a
steady increase of calls
related to ladybugs during
the past four years.
"They are a pain in the
butt. They want to
overwinter in the cracks
and crevices of your house
and they particularly like
the sunny side of the
house," she says.
Baute says old
farmhouses are most likely
to have an invasion of
ladybugs because of a lack
of weatherproofing and
other insulation.
"The best way to keep
them out of your house is
to make sure it's well
sealed up," she says.

Councli, at its Sept. 18
meeting, approved stop signs
at the north and south sides
of the intersection.
Monty Engel, of RR 2
Seaforth, died in a two -
vehicle collision at the
corner at the beginning of
September.
"The request stems from a
desire to increase safety at
this intersection in light of
the latest tragedy and past
accidnents," said his letter to
council.
Whyte told council he is
willing to make a similar
presentation at Central
Huron council, since
Division Line is also in
Central Huron.
He said a variety of factors
have combined to make the
intersection more dangerous
during the past several years.
He said trees and higher
ground obstruct the view for
southbound traffic and
increased traffic has been
caused by paving.
He said that drivers,
looking for a decreased
police presence, will choose
roads parallel to the highway
land that Division Road is a
good shortcut from Walton
to Brucefield.
"My goal more than
anything is to get stop signs
because I think they will
solve some of the problems
there," he said.
Mayor Lin Steffler said
Huron East's public works
foreman can contact his
counterpart in Central Huron
about the intersection.
Seaforth Coun. Dick
Burgess also said he would
approach the police services
board about a four-way stop.
"That's certainly good
stuff," responded Whyte.
Low crop prices and smaller y=ields
may hurt area farmers this season
By Clint Haggart
Clinton News -Record staff
Low crop prices and
smaller yields may cause
income problems for many
farmers.
According to Brian Hall,
of the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture, Food and
Rural Affairs, the edible
bean harvest is just
finishing and there is only
half the normal crop yield.
The bean size, he added,
is also smaller which
results in less marketability
for the crop.
The soy crop, Hall said,
is facing a two-thirds yield
and the bean size is small.
Bill Fleming, of Fleming
Feed Mill, said that the soy
crop is starting to come in
at 20 bushels per acre, half
of what is normally
harvested.
There is concern for next
year's soy seed supply, said
Hall.
Most of the soy seed
supply for Ontario, said
Hall, comes from Huron
County.
Although soy may suffer,
Hall said, planting wheat
without tilling the land will
be easier with the recent
moisture Huron County has
had. He explained that the
moisture makes the ground
softer and easier for the
seed to penetrate.
On Monday, Hall said

that harvesting and planting
will be at a standstill if
forecast rain comes. "We
need a good stretch of
good, dry weather to allow
for a timely bean harvest,"
Hall said.
'w+ Late corn yields are
expected to be down, but
Hall added that he hopes
they're not down as
significantly as expected.
According to Hall the
main impact on farmers
will be financially. He
added that many farmers
will rely on crop insurance
or market revenue
programs.
Although these programs
will help, he noted that they
will only offset the costs of
crop loss, and not living
expenses.
Income and living
expenses for farming
families have to come from
somewhere else, Hall said.
He added that some
families may make up
income if they have
livestock operations, which
have done well in recent
years.
