Huron Expositor, 2002-09-04, Page 5Correspondents Cemetery Sunday attracts large crowd in St. Columban The weather was beautiful as a large crowd of local St. Columban people and visitors gathered Sunday, Sept. 2 in the St. Columban Cemetery in a celebration of resurrection, a tradition becoming known as Cemetery Sunday. The music for the service was provided by Tom and Devon.Burke and the St. Columban choir. The sound system was provided by Larry Kelly. Ann Cronin welcomed everyone and Rita Moylan presented the scripture readings. At the end of the service, Ken Coyne and Neil Murray made presentations to Ray Maloney and Luella Murphy in recognition of their many years of service to the parish and community in their work for the St. Columban Cemetery Board. Sister Margaret Rose Eckert celebrated her 60th anniversary as an Ursuline Sister with mass, a family brunch and an open house gathering.. Cecilia Ryan, Annie Cronin, Teresa and Jerome Kelly, Rita and Keith Kelly, Fred and Betty Eckert, Jimmy and Merle Eckert, Mike Eckert and their families, including several nieces and nephews, attended the gatherings in her honour. Sister Margaret Rose spent many years as a cook, serving her community of Ursuline Sisters in their houses in Tilbury; at Brescia College, London; in Stratford, Essex, and "The Pines" in Chatham. Sister Margaret Rose presently lives in Strathroy and although retired, she serves the community there by visiting the hospitals and nursing homes. T h e family of Ferg and Teresa Feeney gathered at the Manor in Seaforth to surprise Ferg and celebrate his 85th birthday with cake and a pot luck supper. Ron and Mary Ryan recently travelled to Winnipeg where they visited their son, Joe and Paula Ryan, Brent, Megan and Erin. The annual Knights of Columbus co-ed soccer tournament wilt be played on the St. Columban soccer fields on Sept. 16. High school students from all the parishes in the Huron Perth deanery have been invited to form teams to participate in this day of sportsmanship, fellowship and fun. The St. Columban men's second division (London) soccer team played against Croatia in London on Sunday defeating them by a score of 3-2. St. Columban goals were scored by Josh Dietz, Kevin Meidinger and Brian Melady who scored the winning goal with a headball into the net with only 15 minutes remaining in the game. Students at St. Columban School returned to classes this week to find several new faces among their teachers. Tracy Klaver is teaching the Grade 4 class; Deb McCarthy and Kim Buchanan share the duties in the Grade 5 classroom; Dawne Boersen teaches Grace 6; Rob VandenHengel teaches Grade 7; Donna Gregus teaches the Grade 7/8 class and Sheri Onion teaches the Special Education class. The Eckert family invited friends and relatives to the Seaforth Curling Club last Sunday. A huge crowd of relatives and friends joined Sister Margaret Rose on this great occasion. Sister Margaret Rose was born and raised in the Dublin area. Congratulations to Frank and Mary Ann Verberne who celebrated their 25th anniversary on Aug. 28. Congratulations to Joseph and Mary Ellen Delaney who celebrated their 50th anniversary on Sept. 1. Congratulations to Paula Leslie and her husband, Peter Tesluk on the happy arrival of Neil Alexander, born on Aug. 16 weighing 7 lbs. 7 oz. Congratulations to Jim and Jan Gaffney on the safe arrival of Samuel Frederick, born on Aug. 3 weighing 11 lbs. 5 oz. Heartfelt sympathy of the Dublin area is extended to Margaret Kemp of Staffa, on the recent death of her husband, Arthur, who died on Aug. 25. The Shewan family have a special reason for celebrating. Last Sunday, Sept. 9 Joyce Shewan celebrated a birthday, Sept. 9, the same day, Steve and Pam Shewan celebrated their sixth wedding anniversary. Jim and Cathy Meagher of Dublin welcome their first grandchild, Zackary Patrick, born on Aug. 21 weighing 6 lbs. 8 oz. Parents are Patrick Meagher and Barbara Dench. Congratulations to Colm Roderick Cronin, son of Colleen and Mike Cronin; and Matthew Francis Feeney, son of Glenda and Francis Feeney, who received the Sacrament of Baptism in our parish community. Heartfelt sympathy of the community is extended to the Mabb families, on the death of Oscar Coons, brother-in- law of Katherine and Ted Mabb and Theresa and Jim Mabb.
