"It hasn't hurt that I'm aware of," said agricultural society president Gord Glen of the past hoof and mouth fears. In the spring, as the society began preparing for the fair, they decided to add a "feathers" division ensuring there would be a livestock portion of the show. Hoof and mouth disease is highly contagious and was spreading in Europe at the time. The disease reduces the size and stamina of livestock rendering them useless to farmers and the fear in Ontario was worry about the spread of the disease might cause livestock shows at fairs to be cancelled --shows that make up a major portion of most fall fairs. Seaforth's fair features the Western Zone Banner Show and Stan Jackson Memorial Show, both successful cattle shows, and the Huron -Perth Jersey Parish Show among many other livestock events. Adding "feathers".events, birds not being affected by the disease, ensured there would be livestock events and brought back'a feature that has been missing from the fair for several years now. "It hasn't been here for I don't know how long. It was time to bring in something new," said Glen. And bringing the feature back is already proving to be a success with between 250 and 300 entries already expected for the weekend, more than the society had anticipated when bringing the feature back. "We've got flocks from very reputable feather breeders coming," said Glen of entries from water fowl to pigeon and turkeys. Meanwhile, registrations for the traditional livestock events continue to come in and Glen said they will continue to enter right up to the day of the fair. Regardless of this spring's fears, another new feature at the fair this year is the Seaforth Calf Club Show and Sale. Fifteen area youth took part in the club this year, operated for its first time to give youth a chance to experience the business side as well as the hands-on side of raising a calf for sale. Glen is hopeful there will be a good turn out of Mayor apologizes to public works manager By Scott Hilggendorff Expositor Editor Mayor Lin Steffler made a public apology to Public Works Coordinator John Forrest following a closed - session meeting about an issue relating to him. Steffler apologized for bringing up a matter in closed session involving Forrest that had been brought to her attention by a ratepayer. Personnel issues can be discussed in closed -session to protect the privacy of staff members. Steffler said she. has learned that information was incorrect and apologized for giving false information to councillors as well as to Forrest for discussing the undisclosed issue. "It has taught me a valuable lesson to look at both sides of the story," said Steffler. Forrest has repeatedly been under fire by councillors questioning how he is operating his department and where he is sending staff, particularly from McKillop councillors concerned their residents are not seeing enough staff in their ward. Forrest has repeatedly tried to explain that staff will not be in each of the wards on a daily basis like they used to be when they were part of the individual municipalities before the amalgamation.. Instead, they are assigned as teams to whatever jobs need to be done on a weekly basis in the various wards but that the proper work is always being done. The apology was made at council's Sept. 4 public meeting. WE SPECIALIZE IN SYSTEMS For Difficult Sites: • Poor soil • Small lots • Large Systems WE DESIGN, INSTALL & REPAIR a full range of conventional septic systems including ECOFLOW Biofiltration System livestock operators to view and bid on the calves the youth are bringing to the sale. "We wanted to make it a learning experience," he said. "We're really looking forward to having buyers and livestock people here." The fair, which runs Thursday through Saturday, will also feature a pie contest again this year in which past and current society presidents will enter an apple pie they must prove through photographs they made themselves. The pies are judged and then all are sold to raise funds that will go toward a Lions Club project this year. The fair begins Thursday with the Huron -Perth Jersey Parish Show but is not officially launched until Friday when the annual Fall Fair parade takes place along Main Street, starting at 10:30 a.m. Friday, exhibits and the midway open and the day wraps up with the ambassador to the fair competition and a talent show.
