Brussels home like Dunedin Castle
This is the sixth story in a
series about Huron East's
heritage architecture.

A typical day at Terence
Brandon's bed and
breakfast, Dunedin Manor
in Brussels, often includes
a knock at the door by a
stranger asking to tour the
house.
Sometimes, the stranger at
the door is someone who
was born in the house
during the 1940s and 50s
when it was Dr. Charles
Myers' maternity home.
Other times, it's just
someone who is taken by
itte beauty and grandeur of
the Victorian mansion, built
in 1887 by two Scottish
doctors as a model of

Dunedin Castle in
Scotland.
"People are
stopping me all
the time begging for tours.
I've had about 200 people
through this house already,"
he says.
Four years ago, Brandon ,
a gourmet chef from
Toronto, was just another
person drawn to the house.
Travelling through Brussels,
he .stopped at the house,
waded through "weeds taller
than I was onto the
dilapidated front porch,"
and fell in love with the 16 -
room house because it
transported him back in
time.
"The house takes you
right back to Victorian
times. I could just see the
coaches lining the street.
And, it just happened to be
for sale. I realized this
house was a gem and I
wanted to bring it back to its
original condition," he says.
And, while he's since put
$50,000 into the outside of
the house alone, Brandon
says despite having seven
owners, the house is in
"museum -quality shape" on
the inside.
"It really is like stepping
back in time," he says,
pointing to the original
woodwork, stained glass
windows, plaster and
moldings, light fixtures and
fireplaces.
While Dunedin Manor is
designed in the Queen Anne
Renaissance style, complete
with a 75 -foot turret on the
west side, its interior design
is East Lake, a
simplification of Victorian
design which sought to
bring elements of nature
inside the house.

Terence Brandon,
owner of Dunedin
Manor in Brussels
the house was built for
$25,000 in 1887, he says it
would take $2.5 million to
build it today.
"They call this road where
all the houses follow the
Maitland River, Millionaires
Road. This is the main
house built on the tallest
point of land in Brussels
and all the others are set
back further on the street
out of respect for this one,"
says Brandon.
Woodwork throughout,
but especially in the front
entranceway, is rare tiger
oak (oak with tiger stripes
of wood grain).
Brass work on the 48 -
inch -wide front door is
carved with patterns of birds
and trees while stained glass
windows are painted with
indigenous birds such as
bluebirds, cardinals,
hummingbirds and blue
jays.
"Quite a few guests are
amazed at the details in this
house," he says.

Plaster
work in the 25 -
foot grand
hallway is
patterned with willow
leaves and gilded
hummingbirds while plaster
cornices in the doorways
near the 14 -foot ceiling are
carved with various produce
such as fruit, corn and
pineapples.
"The cornices were
supposed to represent the
harvest of the local area,
although pineapples
represented hospitality," he
says.
All of the windows on the
main floor are ringed with a
rainbow of stained glass
squares, a strategy used in
Scotland and England to get
away from the gloominess
of the weather outside.
"Ninety per cent of the
glass is original. I wanted to
keep as much of it as
possible," says Brandon.
A grand staircase made of
tiger oak and cherry leads
up to the second floor and
gentlemen's and ladies'
sitting rooms run from the
front to the back of the
house on the west side.
"The gentlemen would
flip their top coats and
warm their butts at the
fireplace while talking,
smoking, drinking brandy,"
he says of the gentlemen's
parlour.
The ladies' parlour was a
little more delicate and
gentile and there's more
room for knick knacks on
the fireplace," he says.
With walls three bricks
thick, Brandon says the
house does not need air
conditioning but stays at a
constant 68 to 72 degrees
Fahrenheit all summer.
The comfortable
temperatures are also caused
by the 13 140 -foot maples
and pines that surround the
house.
"All the trees were laid
out meticulously," he says.
Brandon has also
resurrected the Victorian
garden on the west lawn that
is shaped in circles, squares
and a Celtic cross in the
centre.
"I looked down from the
turret one day and could see
the pattern of the garden,"
he says, adding it contains
some very rare irises that
are over 100 years old.
Of the two lightning rods
on the roof, one is a 16th
century symbol that protects
the house from evil spirits
and the other is a mixtures
of the initials of the two
doctors who built the house.
"The people who built
castles were very
superstitious," he says.
Other protective symbols
on the outside of the house
include several "witches'
eyes" or compass symbols
pointing to the four
directions with a yellow,
green, blue and red stone in
each of the directions.
"The sun would hit the
stones and they would
dazzle," says Brandon.
