Brett Jewitt photo Kathy Devereaux toplay for Wisconsin University Kathy Devereaux, of Seaforth, was recently signed to the University of Wisconsin's women's hockey team. Devereaux, a forward, will attend Wisconsin at the start of the fall, 2001 semester. A 5-6 left-handed transfer, Devereaux joins the Badgers after playing for Oval X-Treme for four years as a member of the University of Calgary's women's team. She served the Dinosaurs, on of the top college teams in Canada as an assistant captain. A member of the 2000 Under -22 Canadian National Team, Devereaux skated two years with the London Devilettes before her stint with Calgary. She was a member of the Stratford Aces from Grades 9-11 and competed for Team Ontario alongside current Badger sophomore Meghan Hunter in the Canadian Winter Games in 1997 and helped the team to a silver medal. The junior played in this year's Esso National Championships in Canada with her Oval X-Treme team, winning gold. Her team has won two golds, a silver and bronze medal at the event in the last four years. Devereaux also experienced hockey on wheels as a member of Canadian Roller Hockey. In 1999, she competed with the team at the Global Games in Kitchener. She is the daughter of Lorraine and Ken Devereaux and her brother Boyd is a. former first-round draft pick of the Edmonton Oilers, currently playing for the Detroit Red Wings. "Kathy is a speedy forward who's going to add depth to our offense. I am looking forward to her coming in as an impact player, because of her skill and her maturity," says head coach Tina Bourget. Devereaux and the Badgers open the 2001- 2002 season on Friday, Oct. 12 when they take to the ice in St. Cloud, Minn. against the St. Cloud State Huskies. Seaforth lawnbowlers active in out-of-town tournaments Seaforth lawn bowlers have been active in out-of-town tournaments this past week. On Wednesday, Lee Ryan and Carol Carter captured first prize in the Lorne Webb Memorial Tournament in Goderich. At Southampton on Wednesday, Jack and Marie Muir won three games and placed third. Friday two men's pairs teams were in Ingersoll bowling in their second annual tournament. Saturday in Clinton sponsored by Clinton Raceway, Lee Ryan and Carol Carter were high two -game winners. Jack and Marie Muir also won seventh prize. Although our bowling greens could have been mistaken for a lake on Sunday afternoon, the Mitchell Club was able to hold its annual Wm. Ducklou Memorial Tournament. Bowling in Mitchell were Jack and Marie Muir who won fifth and Lee Ryan Seaforth Lawnbowling News and Carol Carter who placed ninth. The heavy rain did not reach there until evening. A social evening was held at the Seaforth Greens on Friday evening for new bowlers hosted by Carol Carter. Sixteen new bowlers enjoyed trying the game of lawn bowls. Members will be busy this week preparing for the Anniversary Art Finlayson Memorial Tournament on Wednesday. There will be well over 100 bowlers competing, weather permitting. It is with regret I report the sudden passing of one of our active members, Thelma Coombs. Thelma has been a longtime member and loved the game of lawn bowls. Last week she bowled Tuesday evening and Friday afternoon and was looking forward to bowling on Wednesdayin the big tournament. She will be greatly missed in many circles and our sympathy goes out to her family at this time. Harpurhey horse qualifies for $600,000 final at Woodbine Trotter Korvette Hanover, trained by local horseman Phil Bisback, of Harpurhey, has qualified for this Saturday's $600,000 final of The Maple Leaf Trot at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto. Korvette Hanover finished fourth in his elimination Saturday, Aug. 18. The top five finishers in each of the two divisions advanced to the final. Bisback and Julian Bertozzi, of Burlington, Ont. share ownership of the seven-year-old trotter. Korvette Hanover has lifetime earnings of $261,510 to date, including $24,640 in 2001 and has a speed record of 1:54 2/5 for one mile. Aug. ii Croninsget to ether g for annual family reunion Descendants of the family of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Dublin Cronin (formerly of Dublin) met at St. Vincent de Paul Church Hall on Aug. 11 for the annual Cronin reunion. This year's event was hosted by Elizabeth O'Rourke's family. Guests included Len, Mary, Rick and Deb Cronin and Michelle Handy from Chicago, Ray, Joyce, Jaclyn Cronin from Detroit, Anne Cronin and Keelan Robinson from Aurora and Joanne Stock from Newmarket. An afternoon of visiting, games and a potluck dinner were enjoyed. Wedding congratulations to Bob Van Der Pryt, son of Cornelius and Nellie Van Der Pryt, of Dublin and Mary Slater, daughter of Reginald and Margeret Slater, of Lakeside, who will be united in marriage by Father Maurice Charbonneau at St. Patrick's Church, Dublin on Aug. 25. Congratulations to Kassie Avery, daughter of Philip and Jennifer Avery, of the Dublin area, who recently won gold in a U.S. tournament. Happy birthday to Connie Murray, of RR 1 Dublin, who celebrates on Aug. 24.
