Amaiida Ryan climbs
mountains in Austria
Amanda Ryan,
daughter of Gerry
and Karen Ryan,
St. Columban
has returned from a
five-week visit to Austria.
The trip, sponsored by the Seaforth Lions
Club and her family, was the experience of a
lifetime for the young woman.
The trip was part of an exchange sponsored
by Lions Clubs all over the world. In order to
participate, Amanda completed an
application process which included
selecting a sports/culture camp,
which lasted for two weeks and
consisted of 40 students, aged 17-21,
representing 21 nations.
The first week was spent in
Vienna, Austria, while the second
week was spent at Salzburg.
The participants learned about each
other's diverse cultures, religions and
languages while traveling and
sightseeing. Amanda did a lot of
hiking and mountain climbing,
visiting mountains and ice caves, a
totally new experience she enjoyed..
Her remaining three weeks were spent
living with a host family in Klagenfurt,
Austria, Helmut and Margot Gritsch and their
14 -year-old daughter Elisa.
Amanda said the area is totally surrounded
by mountains with no straight, flat roads like
there are in Huron and Perth Counties.
Amanda traveled to Slovenia, one and a
half hours away with her host family, where
they enjoyed swimming in lakes. They also
traveled to Italy, only one hour away.
Amanda describes the people as being
equally as hardworking as Canadians but not
as hectic. They live and eat very healthily,
enjoying lots of fruit and vegetables, as well
as schnitzel and sauerkraut. There was not a
single item of junk food to be found in the
house.
The people are very active, hiking and
biking everywhere. There is only one car per
family.
Amanda's
host family spoke
fluent English
and took her to many palaces, castles and
museums. "You are only here once; don't
waste time sleeping," they said to her.
The community welcomes Dafydd Steffan
Cronin, baby son of Dave and Carole -
Michelle Cronin. Proud grandparents are
Jerry and Heather Cronin and Mike
and Cecilia Foltz, of London.
The Family Fun Days are arriving
fast with the trip planned for
Bingeman's on Aug. 23 and to
Canada's Wonderland on Aug. 27.
For more information, call Rhonda
Nolan.
