Metre high waves a challenge
for young Hurricane swimmers
By Susan Hundertmark

Driving to Harbour Beach,
Michigan, 12 -year-old
Christy Hartman, of Hensall,
didn't realize the enormity of
what she and her fellow
Huron Hurricanes were
going to attempt the next day
until she started looking at
the lake outside the car
window.
"Realizing that we were
actually going to swim the
lake was pretty scary. The
night before was the. hardest
part," she says.
But, even though the
waves were a metre high
when they started out,
Christy's fear went away
once she was in the water.
"Once you got the rhythm
of the waves, it wasn't bad,"
she says.
The team of 20 swimmers,
aged 10 to 18, crossed Lake
Huron the first weekend of
August, swimming 44
nautical miles in 27 hours
and 10 minutes and raised
$4,000 for the team.
Even though her team had
trained every Monday night
by swimming to the
Goderich breakwall and back
twice, Christy says the high
waves were a challenge.
"There were no waves
inside the breakwall so it
didn't prepare us for that,"
she says.
Because she is under 13,
Christy, a Grade 8 student at
Hensall Public School,
wasn't allowed to swim at
night but still she had trouble
sleeping on the boat knowing
there were teammates out on
the water.
"I finally got up at 4:30
a.m. and got into the water
around 5. I liked swimming
in the dark," she says.

Laurie Vandendool, Christy Hartman and Kellly Ann Vandendool joined fellow Huron Hurricanes in a fund
raising swim across Lake Huron the Civic Holiday weekend.
While the metre -high
waves during the first six
hours of their Lake Huron
crossing were a bit daunting,
the Kinburn-area•
Vandendool twins say they'd
swim it again.
"It was fun," say both
Laurie and Kelly Ann of
their nine or 10 half-hour
swims as members of the
Huron Hurricanes.
"I've never done anything
that extreme before but it
was a really good
experience," says Laurie.
Kelly Ann was one of a
few swimmers who got
seasick during those rocky
first six hours.
"I'm a boater so it was
weird that I got sick. I think
it was just because we were
going so slow. A lot of the
swimmers had taken Gravol.
I took it afterwards but it
didn't work for me," she
says.
Kelly Ann adds that
swimming in the waves was
