Seaforth golfer will be attending
Eastern Michigan University
By Matt Shuffle
Goderich Signal -Star Staff
One glance at Lindsay
McEwin's golf resume and it's
easy to see why Eastern
Michigan University (EMU)
was quick to sign the Seaforth
Golf and Country Club golfer
and Goderich student.
The Bayfield native captured
eight first place finishes in
2000 including top honours as
the junior girls champion at the
All -Ontario Optimist
championship and a first place
finish at the Ontario Ladies
Golf Association (OLGA)
district championship in Owen
Sound.
Last week McEwin, a
winner of four Tyson Tour
events last summer, signed a
letter of intent to attend EMU
this fall on a full golf
scholarship.
"The past five years I've
been competing in the summer
and I don't see my friends
because I'M sometimes out of
the province," McEwin said. "I
feel like I've sacrificed a lot
but it's been worth it."
McEwin said a phone call
from EMU golf coach James
Mauntler about four months
ago opened her eyes to the
school and the program.
Previously she had been
talking with coaches at Xavier
University in Cincinnati,
Murray State in Kentucky and
Wake Forest.
"Jamie called me really late,
I had never heard of the school
or heard of him." McEwin
said. "He said let me tell you
all the benefits of staying near
home and we talked for two
and a half hours.
"He asked if I was interested
in going to visit and I said yes
and then I told my Dad that I
wanted this guy to be my
coach."
McEwin, who will major in
exercise science and minor in
athletic training, said her initial
conversation with Mauntler
left a strong impression and
proved to
be the determining factor in
choosing EMU.
"Jamie is amazing. The very
first time he called me I
wanted him to be my golf
coach," McEwin said. "I talk
to him like I talk to any of my
friends on the phone - he calls
once or twice a week just to
chat and he's really friendly
and easy to get along with.
"I feel he can take my game
to the next level."
According to McEwin, 18,
that next level includes being
more consistent and ultimately
delivering a Mid -American
Conference (MAC)
championship to her new
coach, school and team.
"I need to be more
consistent and that's one thing
I'm going to work on this
summer," McEwin said. "Last
summer I had 27 toumaments,
this year I have five because I
want time to work on my
game.
Lindsay McEwin
"I have to bring my game
up to a whole new level now
and psychologically I have to
prepare myself for university."
McEwin began her mental
preparation in March when she
attended the first of three
OLGA training camps in
Toronto. There she learned
how to set goals and how to
work towards achieving them.
"Going to the training camp
was amazing," McEwin said.
"It kind of refocused me in a
way - I have a totally new
outlook on golf."
Aside from her confidence
level, McEwin said she will be
targeting her short game this
summer in hopes of recording
top finishes at the Ontario
amateur championship in
Kingsville and the Canadian
amateur championship in
Winnipeg. McEwin will also
compete at the Toronto Star
tournament and the Women's
Western championships in
Chicago.
"I need to work on my short
game, just from 80 yards in,"
McEwin said. "My approach
shots to the green are
manageable but not awesome
and that's where what I want
them to be."
McEwin said she received
five or six scholarship offers
from other American
universities but chose EMU
when Mauntler said she was
guaranteed to play in her first
year.
"He guaranteed me playing
time and he said I'II play right
away," McEwin said. "He said
that I was his number one pick
and that he would do whatever
it takes to get me.
"Being guaranteed to play
right away is why you're
going. I want to play and I
want to get the experience."
Influenced by her father Lee,
McEwin began golfing at the
Bluewater Golf Course in
Bayfield and after realizing she
enjoyed the game, moved her
game to the Seaforth Golf and
Country Club where she
worked and trained with
Carolanne and Cam Doig.
"I started junior mornings at
Bluewater but I got to the point
where I needed to help my
game and take it to the next
level," McEwin said of the
decision to switch to Seaforth.
"They (Seaforth) totally
support juniors, their whole
focus is to get juniors into the
game of golf."
Speaking of support,
McEwin said she couldn't
have succeeded without the
support of her family - perhaps
Adult learning improved
in Stratford and Wingham
By Stow Slater
Special to The Expositor
Adult learning is on the move in Huron and
Perth Counties, with the Avon Maitland
District School Board celebrating what are
being trumpeted as new and improved
services in Wingham and Stratford.
During the "Good News" section of the
board's regular meeting, Tuesday, May 8, two
different board members alerted their
colleagues about recent and upcoming
developments in adult learning.
In Wingham, services located in three
different buildings but operated, at least in
pan, by the board will be consolidated at a
single location on Main Street. According to
director of education Lorne Rachlis, the new
centre will open some time this coming
summer and will include such services as
adult learning and employment counselling.
Also at the May 8 meeting, board chair
Wendy Anderson praised the recent relocation
of the board's Stratford -based adult learning
centre from Stratford Northwestern
Secondary School to the former Portia
Annex, a board -owned building which
formerly housed elementary classrooms.
Anderson and Stratford trustee Meg Westley
attended a recent opening ceremony at the
new site.
In an interview following the meeting,
superintendent of education Bill Gerth
explained the changes offer further proof the
board's adult learning and continuing
education programs arc successful despite
what he called "the dearth of funding
available from governments for this type of
programming." He said the total Avon
Maitland budget allocation for adult and
continuing education is just $50,000, yet
innovative and generous partnerships allow
the board to administer programs valued at
approximately $2 million.
In Wingham, this summer's consolidation
of services from three locations marks a
strengthening of already significant
partnerships between the board and
Wingham-based industry Westcast, as well as
between the board and the federal department
of Human Resources Development (HRDC).
Currently, says Gerth, adult education
programs are operated partly out of a
classroom at F.E. Madill Secondary School
and partly out of an old home on Westcast
property. As well, the board and HRDC
operate the Huron Employment Resource
Centre at a separate location. All three will be
consolidated with the move.
In Stratford, according to Gerth, the main
reason for the move to the former Portia
Annex was the "very cramped" nature of an
existing adult education classroom at
Northwestern.
the only people who have
sacrificed as much as she has
to this point.
"They have supported me
through everything and they
pretty much let me decide
what I wanted to do and where
I wanted to go," McEwin said
of her father Lee and mother
Brenda. "They would he there
for me and 1 always had
tremendous support.
"If I was having a had day
Dad would always take me to
the range and help me work
things out and Mom was
always on the sidelines
clapping and offering support.
They put up with a lot because
if I wasn't playing well 1 was
probably not the nicest person
to be around.
"I really appreciate their
support because there was a lot
of major tournaments out oI'
province and out of country
that I had to attend in order to
get out there and known to
coaches and they helped make
it happen."
