Wave petunias, water gardening
newer attractions for gardeners
in Canada's number one hobby
Wave petunias are one of
the newer attractions for
gardeners, said Susan
Campbell of Stewart Acres,
east of Seaforth.
"You're not supposed to
have to pinch them back or
dead head them. They spread
very quickly," she said of the
flowers that don't require as
much maintenance as some
of the annuals available.
They're just one of many
attractions for gardeners
enjoying an ever growing
recreation as new trends
continue to develop.
Water gardening continues
to grow as more people build
ponds into their landscaping.
"We have a lot of people
going with water gardening,"
said Campbell.
And she said it's not just
for people who have large
yards.
"So many people feel you
have to have a big yard to
have a pond," she said.
People can take something
as simple as an old whisky
barrel, line it, and create a
water garden in their smaller
landscaping projects.
Campbell also said people
can create a small water
garden with just a few water
plants in a pot, placed in a
tlowerbed or landscaped area.
She said they can even be
included in balcony gardens.
And now, there is a
growing interest in "bog
gardens" where plants that
thrive in wet areas are grown,
without a full-scale pond
project.
For those people without
properties, "pot scaping" is
becoming a stronger trend in
gardening on balconies and
apartments.
Once called container
gardening, people are
creating beautiful
"landscaped" areas on their
balconies with a variety of
layers of plants and
containers.
Campbell also said balcony
gardeners are discovering that
with care, they can plant
some perennials that will
survive the winter.

Local gardeners browse through theannuals at Stewart Acres near Seaforth.
The variety of options for
gardeners continues to grow
as people continue to garden
in traditional fashions or
more complex projects.
More traditional perennial
or annual gardens are still
planted as more and more
varieties of flowers come
available each year.
Campbell said some people
now come looking, not for
flowers, but foliage,
particularly when planting
perennials.
She said perennials bloom
for a shorter time period and
-r r
in specific months than
annuals and require more
careful planning by the
varietieschosen for people
who want to be sure they
have flowers blooming in
their gardens all season.
But some people look to
the colour and textures of the
foliage and consider the
flowers an added bonus when
developing their gardens.
