Elston returns from youth
volunteer conference in PEI
St. Columban
Several St. Columban
ladies joined in the fun at the
"Spring Fling" put on by the
Catholic Women's
League ladies of St.
James Church.
Mistress of
Ceremonies, Miss
Evelyn E. Nuff, a
true "Southern
Belle" introduced the
various segments of
entertainment
including skits,
clogging, piano,
singing and a fashion
show of "the most
up-to-date fashions."
An entertaining drama in
song was enacted by Wes
Brennan, Cynthia Nowak and
Crystal Brennan.
Elaine Vanden Hengel,
president of the group, made
a presentation to Lynn
Devereaux for the "Run For
Excellence."
The St. Columban Parish
Hall was filled to capacity, as
were the parishioners, when
the "chefs" used their
barbecue skills to provide the
excellent "bacon on a bun"
and a social get together
enjoyed by all after Mass last
weekend.
Jonathon Elston, son of
Gary and Dianne Elston, has
returned from a trip to
Summerside, Prince Edward
Island, where he and 300
other young people attended a
conference for Youth
Volunteers from all over
Canada.
This year has been named
International Year of the
Volunteer by the United
Nations, and the National
Volunteer Organization
sponsored the conferences.
Workshop topics included
effectiing environmental
change and adapting cross
culturally.
Jonathon himself is
involved in the Red Cross
organization and Amnesty
International. He also serves
as co-chair for a youth group,
a group that works to lessen
discrimination towards sexual
minorities. Jonathon is a
recent recipient of an
Outstanding Youth Award.
Ron and Mary Ryan have
returned from a trip to
Winnipeg where they visited
with their son, Joe and Paula
Ryan, Brent, Erin and Megan.
They also visited the "Joe
Malone Park" located in
Winnipeg.
This park is named after a
former local resident, Joe
Malone, brother of local area
residents Jack Malone, Claire
Murray and Sheila Dolmage.
Joe Malone was quite
involved as a sports coach for
youth in Winnipeg. The park
was dedicated in his honour
after his death.
The students at St.
Columban School made a
presentation called "Cafe
Francais" for their parents
this week, highlighting the
contents of the French
programs at the
school. All classes
were involved in the
singing of French
songs, reading French
essays and serving
French food.
The students also
enjoyed a "Hockey
Day" where everyone
wore their favorite
hockey jersey. Some
of the students wore
face paint to match
their jersey.
Soccer season has started.
The St. Columban Women's
Soccer Team, Second
Division, coached by Jason
Dietz, tied the Scottish 1-1 in
the season opener. The St.
Columban goal was scored by
Joanne Terpstra.
The St. Columban Men's
Soccer Team, London Second
Division, held Tillsonburg to
a 0-0 tie in their season
opener.
Bishop John Michael
Sherlock, assisted by Father
Pio Berochia, Father Dewan
and Father Charbonneau,
presided at Mass and
confirmed 76 candidates from
the parishes of St. Columban,
St. Vincent de Paul and St.
Patrick's in a ceremony at St.
Patrick's Church in Dublin on
May 1. A joint choir
incorporating all three
parishes, was directed by
Caroline Simons, assisted by
Charlene Delaney and Pam
Ryan.
Music was provided by
organist and pianist, Brian
Eckert, with Cathy Rops,
Susan Christie and Carolyn
Murray playing the guitars.
The group of young people
have spent much time in
preparation for this day,
including an in-home study
project, a retreat day and
community service. Kailyn
