West Nile Virus, spread by mosquito
bites, could be coming to Ontario
What is the West Nile
Virus?
West Nile Virus (WNV) is
a virus that can cause
encephalitis (inflammation of
the brain).
WNV is most common in
Africa, West Asia and the
Middle East. The first
outbreak due to WNV in the
Western Hemisphere
occurred in New York City
late in the summer of 1999.
The outbreak resulted in 61
confirmed human cases and
seven deaths.
The virus killed a large
number of birds of different
species, especially the
American Crow, 10 horses
and a cat.
How is WNV spread?
WNV is spread to humans
by the bite of an infected
mosquito. A mosquito
becomes infected with WNV
by biting a bird with the
virus. The virus is not spread
through touching or
contacting a person with the
disease. It is unclear whether
WNV can be spread directly
through birds.
What are the symptoms of
WNV?
Most people infected with
WNV will not experience
symptoms or will have mild
symptoms including fever,
headache, swollen lymph
nodes, skin rash and/or
muscle aches.
In some individuals,
especially the elderly, WNV
may cause encephalitis.
Encephalitis can result in the
rapid onset of severe
headache, high fever, stiff
neck, confusion, coma, and
possibly death. Symptoms

may develop approximately
3-12 days after being bitten
by an infected mosquito.
What is the risk of an
Ontario WNV outbreak?
The risk of the WNV
showing up in Ontario during
the coming mosquito season
is unknown, but during the
2000 season, a dead bird with
the WNV was found only
three kilometres from the
Canadian border. This
finding has increased the
importance of preparedness
in order to detect, monitor,
control and prevent the
spread of this virus.
How can I protect myself
from the WNV?
You can protect yourself
and your family by doing the
following:
• Stay indoors between
dusk and early morning
• Ensure that your door and
window screens do not have
' holes.
• Wear long-sleeved shirts
and pants when you are
outdoors.
• Apply an insect repellent.
Avoid eyes and mouth. Do
not use insect repellent on
children less than two years
old. Use repellents with only
5% to 10% DEET on
children 2-12 years of age.
• Do not touch dead birds.
Contact the health unit to
report any sick or dead birds.
• Reduce the mosquito
population in your area.
What is Ontario doing to
prevent WNV outbreak?
Health Units throughout
the province are developing
prevention, surveillance and
response strategies.
Public education programs
will be focused on source
reduction, personal
protection, and surveillance.
Residents will be asked to
report dead crows, ravens
and jays to the Health Unit.
Health Unit staff will collect
the dead birds and send them
for WNV testing.
