Businesses needed to support
BIA as it faces struggles
Business community seeking help from town organizing its events
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor Staff
About 35 local business
people were asked if they
want to continue having a
Business Improvement Area
(BIA) in Seaforth at a town
hall meeting Monday night.
"It's your call," said
current BIA chair Liz
Cardno. "Five people cannot
run all the activities entailed
in the BIA. It's not fair we
have to make all the
decisions ourselves."
Cardno said the lack of
involvement by local
businesses in the BIA and
the recent loss of municipal
government support for the
BIA has created a "heck of a
burden" for the remaining
BIA directors.
While former Seaforth
deputy -clerk Cathy Garrick
acted as coordinator for the
BIA for several years, the
formation of Huron East in
December caused her to take
on other jobs for the
municipality.
"Everything was positive
until last December but
we're all volunteers now and
we don't have the resources
to do everything necessary.
It's a dilemma. What are we
going to do?" said Cardno.
She responded to concerns
expressed last week by
Business Retention and
Expansion Committee (BR
and E) Chair, Gwen
Devereaux, who last week
told The expositor the BIA
had no leadership and might
fold.
Cardno had disagreed with
that assertion in last week's
article, expressing the need
for help for the BIA.
"Gwen told me she was
misquoted," Cardno told the
business people at the
meeting.
Seaforth ward Coun. Dick
Burgess, Huron East's
representative on the BIA
told the group he is trying to
get some municipal staff
support for the BIA.
"Liz and I share some of
the same frustrations. We
feel that the Seaforth BIA is
entitled to staff support for
their activities. It's been very
slow in coming and has been
promised," he said.
Burgess encouraged local
businesses to inform him and
the rest of council about their
support for the BIA.
"My case would be
strengthened by people
letting me know how
important the BIA is to you.
And, the more directors you
have, the less the burden will
be on everyone," he said.
"I have suggested and will
suggest again that someone
from the clerical staff be
assigned to the BIA."
He also encouraged
anyone supporting the idea
of an economic development
officer for Huron East to
contact members of council
with that support.
Yesterday's Finds opens
in front of Sizzlers restaurant
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor Staff
Antiques and "previously enjoyed" furniture
will be offered at Yesterday's Finds, which
opened recently in front of Sizzlers restaurant.
Sizzlers owners Gary and Julie Gagnier
decided to open the shop in front of their
restaurant to give tourists more reason to visit
Seaforth.
"It's something I heard at a BIA (Business
Improvement Area) meeting about becoming
more like Cookstown with our heritage street,"
says Gagnier.
Cookstown is a small town on Highway 400
near Barrie that attracts tourists to its
downtown of quaint gift shops.
"We're trying to stay away from average
used fumiture and only offer quality pieces of
older furniture, pieces that appeal to my eye as
solid pieces of fumiture. Some will definitely
be antiques," he says.
Gagnier says he has been accumulating
furniture over the past eight months from
auctions. Along with the furniture, he'll be
selling accent pieces and gifts as well.
He adds that while he hopes to offer quality
furniture, he wants to try and sell it for
"cheaper than new" prices.
"The inventory will change rapidly so buy
when you see it. It's going to be one of a
kind," says Gagnier.

An economic development
officer, at a proposed budget
of $100,000 a year, was
recently pitched to council
by the BR and E.
"It will be a political
decision whether funds are
set aside to hire an economic
development person and the
best way of persuading
council would be business
networking in other areas of
•Huron East," said Burgess.
Eleven people volunteered
to become directors at
Monday's meeting. A chair
and vice chair will be voted
in at another meeting
Monday, May 14 to give
absent BIA members another
chance to attend.
Cardno said while the BIA
is behind in its planning this
year, it will be going ahead
with its Moonlight Madness
promotion on July 27 and its
Community Yard Sale
promotion on June 2 with
sidewalk sales from May 31
to June 2.
