This past
weekend, several
area people
St. Columban
attended the annual
barbecue sponsored by the local Knights of
Columbus. Visiting was enjoyed
along with fabulous food, prepared
by "the chefs" and their helpers.
"The chefs," will be hand at work
again on May 6. A social time is
planned after Mass in St. Columban,
during which "Bacon on a Bun,"
coffee and juice will be available.
Everyone is welcome to attend.
Jean Van Drunen has returned from
a recent visit with her daughter,
Joanne and Bruce Pratt in
Windemere, Florida (near Orlando).
Jean reports that the weather was just
beautiful, warm and sunny.
The Grade 7 and 8 students at St.
Columban School enjoyed their confirmation
retreat day this past week.
The retreat day is in preparation for
confirmation, which they will receive in
Dublin on May 1.
The day
was facilitated by
Father Moe
Charbonneau along with teachers, Mrs.
Waechter, Mr. Haig and Mrs.
Petrasek.
Rosemary Terpstra gave a
presentation to the students about
"service" during which she talked
about her trip to help build schools.
They take with them many items of
clothing and other useful items which
are given to the people there.
The young people also participated
in ice breakers, group sessions,
prayers, pizza and making a
confirmation album and name tags.
The St. Columban School boy's and
girl's basketball teams each placed
second in the system -wide basketball
tournament held on Wednesday in Stratford.
Mrs. Waechter's class also participated in
the Kiwanis Music Festival in the Choral
Speaking and came first in its division.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY
What's the biggest jewel in
the world? The baseball
diamond.
Residents enjoying sundaes,
banana splits in warm weather
The with the Notes
beginning of of Yesteryear.
April marked Members of the
band included
Maplewood Manor Nursing Home
the end of our
Easter penny sale. It was an exciting
afternoon as residents gathered to take part in
the draws. Betty Harris and Barbara Scott
were craft volunteers for the event.
Flowers, ribbons and all the trimmings
were on hand for residents to decorate their
hats for our Easter bonnet contest.
Judging was not easy, but Herta Brodhagen
was named the winner. Ruth Wallace
managed to collect the most eggs during the
Easter egg hunt. Elgin Nott came in second
place.
During the Easter season, Rev. Macgregor,
Rev. Springett, Rev. Vandermey and Bob
Hulley led in worship service.
Warm, sunny days prompted us to have ice
cream parlour where residents were treated to
sundaes and banana splits with all the
trimmings.
The ladies of Maplewood were pampered
when Margaret Whitmore came to do
manicures. Their hands and nails looked
beautiful.
Residents enjoyed an afternoon of music
Rena Young, Andrew Patrick, Bill Albert,
Ivan Norris and John Zettel.
Horticulture club with Eleanor Horst was
busy transplanting plants that were started
earlier in the spring. We are eager to see them
planted outside.
Residents were delighted with the flowers
and•cookies that they received from the
Confirmation study group who came for a
visit.
Residents enjoyed their weekly games of
bingo with Helen MacKenzie and were
treated to chocolate ducklings as special
prizes for Easter.
Crokinole has become a very popular game
at Maplewood because of the help of our
volunteers. They include Peggy and Charlie
Perkins, Helen MacKenzie, Velma Preszcator
and Beth Pryce. We are looking forward to
the Senior Games Crokinole to be held at
Maplewood Manor on May 7 at 10:30 a.m.
Geri Fashions will also be at Maplewood
on May 11 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
