Sliding into spring...

Physiotherapy month
sees medical celebrity
come to Seaforth
The theme for this year's
national physiotherapy month
(April 22 -May 21) is "Spring
Into Action." Locally our
Seaforth Community
Hospital physiotherapists
have organized three
initiatives.
The kickoff event, held on
April 24, was a lecture to the
Huron Perth Hospitals
Partnership (HPHP) group of
physiotherapists and their
colleagues by Doctor Peter
Fowler, a celebrity among
physiotherapists, who is an
orthopedic surgeon from
London.
Doctor Fowler, who has
acted as Team Canada's
Chief Medical Officer and
Orthopedic Consultant at the
Olympic Games, discussed
the anterior cruciate ligament
tear, a common sport injury
of the knee. Local
physiotherapists were
honoured to have such a
respected leader in sport
medicine share his time and
expertise with them at
Seaforth Community
Hospital.
Another talk during kick
off week was presented at the
palliative care course in
progress at Seaforth Manor
Nursing Home.
"The role of the
physiotherapist when cure is
no longer a goal," was the
subject.
The third initiative will be
a presentation at Seaforth
Community Hospital at the
nurse practice council
meeting. The topic will be
"Developing an Approach to
the Assessment of Cognition,
Mobility and Mood in Older
Adults."
Coinciding with the start of
spring, the Canadian
Physiotherapy Association, is
promoting gardening safety
for national physiotherapy
month this year.
Yard work can help
improve flexibility
Physiotherapists
advise caution
to avoid spring
cleaning injuries
Thirty minutes of yard
work, planting, or raking
gives great general health
benefits such as preserving
flexibility and building
strength and endurance.
But most of us tend to
overdo it our first few times
in the garden. Aches, pains,
sprains and sometimes
breaks often result from
improper positioning of the
body, overuse of specific
muscle groups, poor
gardening techniques and
pushing ourselves to work
harder and longer than we
should.
In order to minimize wear
and tear on your body, the
'physiotherapists of Canada
suggest these precautions:
Begin with a warm up.
Start with some easy raking,
or go for a five minute walk
to warm up your muscles.
Follow this with stretching
of all the major muscle
groups to help prevent
injury. Give your back, neck,
hands, and fingers some
cxtra time when stretching;
Be aware of your posture
and body mechanics. Move
your feet instead of twisting
at your waist when
sweeping, mulching or
potting. If you can't avoid
twisting, tighten your
stomach muscles in order to
protect your back;
Use ergonomically -correct
tools. Buy tools with long
handles to help with
weeding. Build or buy a
potting bench that is high
enough to prevent
unnecessary bending for
you. Sit on the ground to
trowel without bending over.
When kneeling use knee
pads to avoid putting too
much pressure on your
knees. Wear gardening
gloves to protect your hands
from blisters, cuts and
dryness.
Pace yourself. We all tend
to do too much in too short a
period of time when
gardening. Take breaks
throughout your work and do
some gentle stretching to
keep yourself limber. Vary
your activity to make sure
you allow different muscles
to be used and don't
overwork one particular
muscle. Repetitive use of a
specific muscle or muscle
group can cause pain or
injury;
Be smart in the sun. Wear
a hat and use sunscreen to
protect yourself from
sunburn or heatstroke. Drink
lots of water and try to work
in the shade as much as
possible to prevent
dehydration.
