greater athitpresence
is needed in downtown
From Pogo 4
the streets at the hours when
these incidents have
occurred.
Parents, if your children
are not at home at 4:30 in the
morning and you are not
absolutely certain where they
are, it's time that you are
more aware --for their safety
and ours.
In a situation like this, a
downtown curfew would not
be a bad idea until the
culprits are found.
Yes, it victimizes the
greater percentage of youth
who want and deserve the
freedom to hang out with
friends where they choose
but this week's incidents
prove that the editorial of
two weeks ago was not an
overreaction and that the
threat is real.
Now that • we have
determined, without a
doubt,that there is a real,
genuine threat to our stores
and the lives of people who
live above them, the
community needs to take it
seriously.
Police cannot be
everywhere at once. They
need to be taking telephone
calls from concerned citizens
seeking a greater response in
the community tight now.
And maybe the police
could offer to set up one of
the proactive programs they
often talk about and initiate a
public meeting offering a
COPS program, (Citizen's on
Patrol).
Rather than complaining
about the lack of police
service in town, we could do
something about the
problems ourselves and give
them a hand.
Coupled with some help
with the OPP's auxiliary
officers, there needs to be a
continuous presence in the
downtown right now
showing a need for respect
for people and their lives and
property.
Too many young people
are roaming the streets,
making noise, cursipg and
being disruptive to the
downtown core.
They fail to understand
how their numbers alone
initimidate others, even those
who are just there to hang
out with friends.
They need to be
encouraged by the presence
of adults and authority
figures to find something
else to do with their time,
like maybe sleeping when
it's 4 a.m.
And as of Saturday, I now
speak of this as a member of
the downtown core by not
only virtue of my place of
work being here but now,
also my residence.
In just two nights living in
the downtown I witnessed a
drunken young person
passed out in the hallway of
my apartment (after puking
down the greater length of
the stairwell). I have heard
the whoops and hollers of
several youth coming
through the building with no
concern for the tenants and
no business being there.
And, I had the awful
experience of seeing the
flames through my living
room window of Jim Sills'
store, feeling real fear and
wondering whether or not I
needed to get the other
tenants up and out of the
building, not knowing how
big or small the fire was or
how quickly it was
spreading.
This was not a great
welcome to the community
of Seaforth after finally
moving here from Goderich.
Even as I write this, I have
no,t made up my mind
whether or not to finish
unpacking the boxes and,
instead, look for a new place
to live; one where I don't
have to be afraid to go to bed
at night wondering which
building will be targeted next
and whether or not the fire
department will be able to
get there in time the next
time it happens.
As a neighbourhood of
businesses and tenants, we
need to look at forming a
neighbourhood watch
program of our own, helping
to protect ourselves and
maybe discourage the
unwanted vandals who are
roaming our streets.
