Murray on national team
By Chris Colbourn
Mitchell Advocate staff
Despite a long, hard-fought
playoff series, former Dublin
area resident and current
member of the Edmonton
Oilers, Rem Murray is done
for the season or is he?
Although his team was
eventually eliminated from
the 2000-2001 NHL playoffs
by Dallas, Murray won't be
starting his summer just yet.
Last Wednesday, he was
asked to join the Canadian
hockey team in Germany,
preparing for the world
championship tournament.
Murray, who played his
minor hockey in Seaforth,
played all 82 regular -season
games for the Oilers and had
15 goals and 21 assists on the
year, and during the playoff
series against Dallas, had two
goals. The Stars eliminated
the Oilers in six games.
But, now it's time to show
his other true colors. Murray
will join teammates Ryan
Smyth, Jason Smith and Eric
Brewer on Team Canada.
The big forward said taking
them up on the invitation was
not a tough decision.
"No question in my mind
at all," Murray told the
Edmonton Journal. "I've
never played for Canada at
an international tournament,
so I jumped at the chance.
I've watched all those
Canada Cpps, and even
though this isn't the same
calibre, as a kid you always
wonder what it would be like
to play for your country."
Those sentiments are also
shared by Murray's father
Ron, a Mitchell resident who
is always with his youngest
son in spirit, wherever Rem
is playing.
Ron said he was very
disappointed when Rem and
the Oilers lost to Dallas, but
was overjoyed when he got
the call that Rem was going
to Germany.
Former Dublin
team.
"It was certainly
unexpected," Ron laughed.
"But I can tell you this.
When he (Rem) phoned, he
was excited."
Ron said right after talking
to his son, Rem had to pack
what he could and leave for
the airport.
Ron said he and his wife,
Theresa, both said they will
be watching their youngest
son via television—and with
about seven hours time
difference there may be some
late night games for the
parents.
Ron said even though Rem
won't be chasing a Stanley
resident Rem Murray, an Edmonton Oiler picked up last week for the national hockey
Cup this year, to play for you
country's hockey team is a
great honor.
"It won't be playoff
hockey," he said. "But
they're going to work just as
hard."
And if Rem brought home
a gold medal?
"That would be the greatest
thing in the world (next to
the Cup)," Ron said with a
smile.
Canada opened the world
championship in Hannover,
Germany on Saturday against
Norway, a 5-0 win. They also
defeated Italy 3-1 Monday.
St. Anne's students coming
to do community projects
By Scott Hilyendorff

About 85 St. Anne's
students from Seaforth will
be in town May 14 §flowing
their "Eagle pride" by
engaging in several
community projects.
"The intention is for the
kids to take pride in where
they go to school and where
they live," said organizer
Andrea Leroux, a teacher at
the high school.
Students call it Eagle Pride
Day and it will see projects
taking place in Clinton and
Goderich as well.
Locally, about 20 students
will be going to the Seaforth
and District Community
Centres to help staff clean up
from a buck and doe that will
occur that weekend and set
up for the weekly bingo held
that night.
Ten more will go to the
Seaforth Agri-plex for a
clean-up and tree planting
project there.
Another 10 students will
be going to Seaforth Manor
to run a bingo for residents.
Others will hold a free car
wash at an undetermined
location.
Leroux said they haven't
found a place yet that has
running water where they can
set up.
More students will he
doing a clean-up of the
walking trail at Munn's Bush
and others will be doing
some painting at a local
residence.
Leroux said letters and
advertising were used to
reach out across the
communities seeking
submissions for projects
from community groups and
citizens.
Students will work in the
communities from 9 a.m.
until 11:30 a.m. and the
volunteer work is not being
counted as part of the
provincial requirements that
students
engage in
community
service.
That
assignment is
for students
individually.
Leroux
said this is a
chance to
work as a
group,

communities where they live.
Leroux said because this is
not part of their curriculum
of volunteer work, it "makes
what our kids are doing even
more special."
Following
the morning,
students are
being bused
back to the
school where
lunch will be
provided for
them followed
by a "sock
hop" in reward
for their efforts
and to further
build the
school
community.
"None of the stuff the kids
are doing is being charged
for. The intention is for the
kids to give something back,"
said Leroux.
