Residents upset with Bluewater
over enforced tax collections
By Angela Pickering
Lakeshore Advance staff
Enforced tax collections for
the Municipality of
Bluewater have left some
residents upset with council.
The past transition board
for Bluewater made a
decision last fall to proceed
with the tax sale process with
RealTax instead of the
county. The process was for
property owners who were
three years in tax arrears.
The first of January, the
municipality registered all
property owners in three
years tax arrears with
RealTax, beginning the
process of selling their home
to retrieve past taxes owed.
A letter scnt to Bayfield
Councillor Joe Laudenbach
by a Bayfield resident
complained about the $428
administrative charge billed
to him from RealTax.
Laudenbach forwarded the
letter to Clerk -Administrator
Janisse Zimmerman and
Treasurer -Deputy Clerk
Luanne Phair.
Since the complainant had
received his notice in the
mail, he had paid his tax bill
in full, plus the $428 tacked
on by RealTax. The letter he
sent stated he wanted to be
refunded the $428, claiming
he didn't know he didn't
have a full three years to pay
his taxes.
Laudenbach said he felt the
municipality should refund
the resident.
Mayor Bill Dowson said,
"If you do it for him, you
have to do it for everyone in
the municipality that is in tax
arrears."
Laudenbach agreed saying
council should defer the tax
process until June 2001,
when the administrative
charge will be then added on
if taxes still are not paid.
Hay Councillor Brad
Mousseau become angry,
saying, "Why hasn't he paid
his taxes in three years?"
Zimmerman said the $428
has already been paid to
RealTax. The fee equalled
almost $6,000 for all those
residents who were in
arrears. She said the
municipality would have to
eat up those costs if it
refunded them. She
recommended the charge of
$428'not be refunded.
Phair said there was no
change in tax policy. Arrears
collection is just handled by
RealTax now instead of the
county. The county had the
same costs for arrears after
three years. She also felt the
$428 fee should not be
refunded.
After some arguing, it was
agreed that council would
not refund the Bayfield
resident nor anyone else who
complained.
