Hop-a-thon sees children raising funds next week for Muscular Dystrophy Spring is coming and so is the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Canada's (MDAC) Hop-a-thon. During the season, many able-bodied children will help children with a neuromuscular disorder by hopping and raising funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Canada. Seaforth Co-operative Children's Center will hold their event on April 9-12 as 9:15 a.m. The Hop-a-thon is a fun group activity for young children. It is designed to educate children about physical disabilities, while at the same time improving their counting, coordination and creativity skills, and most of all - about helping others and having a 'hopping' good time doing so. Neuromuscular disorders affect children, men, and women of all ages, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Some disorders are hereditary; others are not. They can strike anyone, at anytime, and there are currently no cures. MDAC works in partnership with people affected by neuromuscular disorders to contribute to their quality of life. "These three women have done a lot of work preparing for the Boston Marathon and it would he great for people just to he there to motivate them for their big day. It's a big race," says Anderson. The runners began visiting local schools this week, starting at Seaforth Public School on Tuesday and continuing at Huron Centennial tomorrow (Thursday), Seaforth District High School on Friday and St. James on Monday, April 9. The school visits are also stressing the importance of walking or running and students will be invited to integrate running 26 miles into their phys. ed. classes by running laps until the end of the month. "By running the 26 miles in laps, students will have a chance to enter a draw for free running shoes, a knapsack and t -shirts," says Anderson. "I think it'll be fun for kids to focus on what it's like to train for a marathon," she says. While the students are not being asked to raise any money for the hospital campaign, Anderson says She hopes parents might he encouraged to sponsor the runners. Hospital staff at Seaforth Community Hospital has also begun their own "walk - along" by sponsoring themselves to walk or run 26 miles by June 21, with the• money raised going towards the seniors' centre project. "The staff came up with the idea themselves. They want to see the centre of excellence idea succeed and they want to get healthy at the same time," says Anderson.
