Steve McInally honoured by Centenaires, fans By Susan Hundertmark Expositor Staff As the only Centenaire who's remained on the team for seven years, Steve McInally was honoured Friday night by the Se/forth team. "Despite many requests and urges for him to join other teams, he's had seven unprecedented years as a Centenaire, remaining faithful to his hometown team and playing a pivotal part in convincing others to stay," Cents' manager Dave Parsons told the crowd during a dedication ceremony of McInally's team sweater. As a three-year all-star team member, four- year most valuable player, two-year captain and four-year top scorer, McInally was an inspiration to all the players, said Parsons. A new award in McInally's name will be awarded each year to the player who best exemplifies dedication, commitment and heart while his team sweater will hang from the rafters of the arena. McInally, now 23 and playing Senior A in Clinton, said he loved being on the • Centenaires Junior D team from 1993 to 2000. "I'm very honored. I never thought this would happen," he said of the evening's tribute to his seven years as a Centenaire. Some of his best memories of his time as a Centenaire include a quadruple overtime game against Mitchell in 1994, which lasted until 2 a.m. when Mitchell won 2-1 after 102 shots on goal by both teams. "I was playing as a midget as well as a junior that year and I had to play a midget game the next day," he said. Another good memory comes from 1995, the year the Centenaires put Exeter out of the playoffs in a seven -game series. "We had a big rivalry against Exeter," he said. And, a bittersweet memory is his final game as a Centenaire when Seaforth was put out of the playoffs by Mitchell in 2000. "I stayed after the game by myself, sat on the bench in Mitchell and looked at the ice for a long time that night," he said. Unique hockey tournament emphasizes sportsmanship By Scott Hilgendorff Expositor Editor A total of 24 teams will take to the ice this weekend in the 35th annual Knights of Columbus hockey tournament. And organizers are trying to reemphasize the tournament's original concept of sportsmanship. "We're striving to get back to the basics of sportsmanship," said George Kreutzwiser, hockey committee chair for the local Knights of Columbus group. "We shoot to encourage children to come out and play that halve never played before, out of the separate schools," said Kreutzwiser. The teams are pulled from separate schools in Huron and Perth County and Kreutzwiser said almost all of the schools in the system participate now. "It's about sportsmanship and fun. It's not competitive," said Kreutzwiser. Anyone in Grades 3 to 8 can participate, giving youth who may have never been able to play minor hockey a chance to enjoy being on a team for the tournament. "We're getting great participation from all the schools involved," said Kreutzwiser. Hensall library will expand By Angela Pickering Lakeshore Advance Staff Friends of the Library have been granted permission for their expansion project that will take over the old council chambers. At Bluewater's Committee of the Whole meeting on Feb. 12, a delegation presented information concerning the go-ahead to renovate the library in Hensall into the space that was previously used as council chambers. At the November, Bluewater Transition Board meeting, the board passed a resolution to recommend that Bluewater council support the Hensall Library expansion. An expenditure of $50,000 was allotted by the Hensall Council from the sale of their PUC. The Friends of the Library focussed on the positive effects it will have on the Village of Hensall. Spokeswoman Mary Lynn MacDonald asked for the approval so they can start on the project as soon as possible. Council felt that a committee should be formed to work with the Friends of the Library to work together through the tender process and construction. A• motion was passed by Brad Mousseau and seconded by Diane Denomme that the Friends of the Hensall Library be given permission to proceed with the expansion and renovations to the library. It was also noted that Bluewater will pay for the costs until the money from the sale of the Hensall PUC is received. Teams are divided into junior and senior levels of Grade 3 to 5 students and Grade 6 to 8. Junior play on Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Seaforth and District Community Centres while seniors take to the ice the same times Sunday. The Knights of Columbus will also be holding a breakfast at the centre both days starting at 7:30 a.m. and ending Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and Sundpy at 12:30 p.m. The breakfast will help raise funds to pay for the tournament. "It's for the appreciation of fun and fair play," said Kreutzwiser. Stereo stolen from truck A $500 c 1 player was stolen from an unlocked truck in Tuckersmith Ward.
