Cent's, Irish tie series
at two ames apiece
A series couldn't be much closer than the
Seaforth Centenadlres, Lucan Irish match up
has proven to be thus far in Junior D action.
After losing game one 4-3 in overtime the
Cents rebounded with an 8-0 win before
turning around Wednesday and dropping an 8-
0 decision followed by a 4-3 win on Friday.
Management and coaching staff just shook
their heads in amazement following
Wednesday's 8-0 loss.
"We were behind 3-0 after the first period,
we could just as easily have been up 5-3,"
noted coach Art Larivee.
"We couldn't buy a goal despite the
chances."
The Cents matched the Irish with 32 shots
on goal but were thwarted at every
opportunity.
"There's no question we didn't play our best
gamy'," said coach Jason Papple.
"But I didn't think it was that bad (8-0), I
think we lost our focus halfway through, down
by 5. A couple of buried chances, maybe it's a
different story, " he said.
To make matters worse, the Cents lost Mark
Stanley to a broken wrist. Stanley has
averaged a point a game since joining the
squad.
Friday night the Cents hoped to rebound and
even the series at two. The Cents came out
with some intensity in what proved to be "a
sloppy" game according to coach Papple.
"Neither team was very good in their own
end tonight and it was clutch and grab hockey
up and down the ice, but the effort was there,"
said Papple.
Scott Henderson opened the scoring
walking around the Irish net on the power play
patiently picking his spot.
It was Henderson again taking advantage of
an Irish turnover caused by a strong penalty
kill forecheck by Scott Van Dooren putting the
Cents up 2-0.
The Irish fought back with a power play
marker and a blast from the point that foiled
goalie Chuck Robertson to even the score.
Just a minute later however, it was the
forecheck again, this time Joe Nesbitt and Josh
Holland causing a turnover that Jake Mavity
rifled home to take a 3-2 lead into a scoreless
second period.
The Cents kept pressing for the third period,
not comfortable sitting on the one goal lead.
Midway through the period Jeff Arnold picked
up a stretch pass across the Irish blue line, was
hauled down before Tim Sills picked up the
puck and took a shot setting a rebound out to
Arnold who deked and scored for the 4-2 lead.
The Irish, narrowed the gap again jumping
on a miscue in the Cents' end leaving two
Lucan forwards alone in front of Robertson
who had no chance. With the 4-3 lead heading
into the final minutes, a strong Cents
forecheck kept the Irish hemmed in their own
end not allowing Lucan to pull their goalie in
hopes of an equalizer.
The win tied the series at two games each.
Game five is Wednesday night in Lucan
followed by game six in Seaforth Friday night.
Game seven, if necessary will be Sunday
afternoon in Lucan.
In other conference action Mt. Brydges
eliminated Exeter four games to zero including
three overtime victories. Port Stanley took
North Middlesex in four games.
With a win on Saturday nighthe Mitchell
Hawks managed to stay alive but are down
three games to one versus Thamesford.
The Seaforth Skating Club celebrated 50 years of skating on Sunday with Carnival 2001 at the
arena. Skating to Blue Suede Shoes above were the level 3 skaters including Nicholas Van
Bakel, Nicole Chisholm, Amanda Ward, Joelle Glanville, Robert Campbell, Brittany Leppington,
Ian Van Doornik, Logan Bruxer and Cassie Morey. (Clint Wulf photo.)
