some maracas during last week's Mexican Fiesta held at the Manor.
Students take part in recent
public speaking competition
Ten young
people participated
in a commitment
ceremony during
St. Columban
Sunday morning Mass in St. Columban
Church presided by Father Tony Daniels.
The ceremony begins the period of
preparation for confirmation. The
candidates from St. Columban will
join young people from St. Patrick's
in Dublin and St. Vincent de Paul in
Mitchell in receiving the sacrament of
confirmation in a ceremony presided
by Bishop John Sherlock at St.
Patrick's in Dublin on May 1.
Parishioners from St. Columban are
also busy preparing for the upcoming
penitential season of Lent. It will
begin with Ash Wednesday Mass in
St. Columban Church at 7:30 p.m. on
Feb. 28.
Several local ladies attended the
annual Catholic Women's League Fun Night
held at the Mitchell arena. The event,
sponsored by the CWL councils from Dublin,
Mitchell, Kennicott and Kinkora, was
overwhelmingly supported as ladies from all
over the Huron -Perth Deanery gathered for a
night of fun and fellowship.
The skilled harmony of the Swiss Choir,
who sang "a cappella" in five languages,
topped the evening. The Swiss Choir is
comprised of men and women from different
areas of Switzerland, dressed in the diverse
costumes representing the small, diverse
villages of the distinct areas from which they
have come. It was explained that each area
keeps their own identity but they unite
together to keep Switzerland strong.
Kevin and Nancy Kale, Patrick and
Michael, visited in Ottawa with friends, Joan
and Stu Wilson, Matthew and Tim. While
there, they took in the sights and sounds of
"Winterlude," a winter festival.
Rosemary Balfour has returned from North
Delta, B.C., where she visited with her sister,
Loretta and Gord Butters and family.
Jim and Janneke Murray recently took a
trip to Fort Lauderdale, Horida, where they
participated in seminars. They then travelled
to Port Charlotte,
Florida, where
they visited with
Pat and Wilf
Hartleib and family.
Members of the St. Columban Choir joined
members of the St. James Choir in an
evening of fun, food and fellowship
held at the home of Rudy Jansen.
Games of "One Eyed Jacks" and
"Sequence" as well as visiting
ensured that a good time was
enjoyed by all.
The students at St.
Columban School celebrated
Valentine's Day with a "Red/Pink"
day during which everyone could
dress up in red or pink. The Grade 5
class took the prize because the
entire class dressed appropriately.
The Grade 7 and 8 classes held a
belated Valentine's dance after the
snow wreaked havoc with their original
attempt. Everyone brought their favourite CD
to provide music.
The Grade 4 class participated in a retreat
day in preparation for receiving the
sacrament of reconciliation.
The Grade 6, 7 and 8 classes have enjoyed
some curling and hockey.
Public speaking is a big event at the
school. Competitions were held recently at
the school level. In the Junior Division
(Grades 4, 5 and 6) Carolyn Murray placed
first with a speech about "Grandparents";
Janelle Murray placed second speaking about
"Fairy Tales"; and Lisa Ducharme placed
third speaking about "Being Short." In the
Intermediate Division (Grades 7 and 8)
Kailyn Burke placed first talking about the
Columbine High School shooting; Michelle
Van Loon placed second with a speech about
"Short Forms"; and Christina Simons placed
third talking about forms of discrimination in
being "Blue-eyed." Kailyn Burke competed
this past Sunday at the Mitchell Legion
competition with her speech on the
Columbine shooting and placed first. She
will advance to the zone competition at the
Seaforth Legion.
