says Ferg.
While the two of them were raised on farms
north and south of Dublin, Ferg and Teresa
didn't actually meet until Ferg returned from
the. Second World War at age 29. At a
homecoming party for him in St. Columban in
December of 1945, Teresa, at 19, was playing
the piano in a small local
orchestra that played at church
dances.
"She's been my valentine
ever since," says Ferg.
"I stopped playing the piano
to have a dance with Ferg and
we've lived happily ever after,"
says Teresa.
"He travelled the world and
came back to find the best," she
says.
They married in May of
1947 and farmed two and a half
miles south of St. ColuiVban
until 1990. During that time, they had 11
children, two of which died as babies.
"We had good times and bad times but we
always worked together on everything," says
Ferg.
When they started out, they had a mixed
farm, milked the cows by hand and used a
walking plow. Teresa worked both in the house
and on the farm, especially during haying time.
"Our day was from daylight to dark but
there was always time after supper in the
summer for a game of ball," says Ferg.
He says those ball games, which used to
draw all the neighbour kids along with their
own nine children, to play ball in the stubble of
a recently -cut hay field, are some of his best
memories.
"There used to be some really good games,"
he says.
One of Teresa's best memories is the day she
and her husband held a grandchildren's day -
no parents allowed - when they spent the day
playing and barbecuing with their
grandchildren.
"One of my grandsons told his mother the
day was awesome and because that was the
first time I'd heard that expression, I didn't
know if that was good or bad," she laughs.
White they spend many years surrounded by
children, sometimes even
adding 11 visiting nieces and
nephews from Toronto to their
own children, the Feeneys say
they always took a trip for just
the two of them every year.
"We always took that time
together. It's important to take
time for yourself. We never
knew where we were going
when we started out. It was an
adventure," says Teresa.
Over the years they travelled
all over southwestern Ontario,
making several trips up to
Tobermory and Midland. And, their children
even sent them on trips - once on their 25th
anniversary to Montreal where they'd spent
their honeymoon and again on their 40th
anniversary to Florida.
Despite some health problems during the
past 10 years, the Feeneys say they feel lucky
to still be together in a room at the Manor's
Nursing Home.
And, living in the Manor has not stopped
them from having big family parties with as
many of their nine children and their spouses,
19 grandchildren and two great grandchildren
that can attend.
Last summer, the Feeneys organized a big
potluck barbecue on the grounds of the Manor.
"You've never seen such food in your life. I
hope to have more of those parties this
summer," says Teresa.

Some water pressure increase
could help Brussels firefighters
The Brussels Fire
Department should now have
more water pressure for
fighting fires but it won't be
quite as strong as it once was
before a high bacteria count
shut down a well around
May.
Brussels Ward Coun. Joe
Seili told council at its Feb. 6
meeting the current pressure
levels were not acceptable to
himself or the Brussels Fire
Department.
Public Works Coordinator
John Forrest expected a
chlorinator to be in place late
last week that would allow
the well to be used safely
again and meet stricter
provincial water standards
now in place after this
summer's Walkerton water
crisis.
Having the well back in
operation means an extra
pump would be operating to
increase the pressure.
However, Seili pointed out
before Brussels became part
of Huron East, there was
staff available that, when
there was a fire call, could
manually increase the
available water pressure to
assist the fire department.
That staff is now relocated
in a more distant area of
Huron East, making it
impossible for them to get
back to Brussels and increase
the water pressure when
there's a fire.
The staff, who live in
Brussels and have the
qualifications to operate the
water system, would still be
able to help outside of work
hours if an emergency
occurred overnight.

The association currently provides housing
for 26 people in Perth County. It also
provides information and education about
trental illness and daily community support
for clients with mental illness.
Robertson says the association has made a
conditional offer on the Lorne Villa building
and hired a Goderich architect with expertise
on heritage buildings to inspect the building
and let the board know if it can afford the
changes• that will be necessary to change
some of the building from residential to
office space.

"We're really excited about the potential
of the building. The town has told us of a
loan fund for heritage properties and we've
found out that the Trillium Foundation has
been approving grants for heritage
buildings," says Robertson.
"It's a gorgeous building which needs
some paint and improvement but we intend
to preserve it," he says.
Robertson says the association is also
looking at other properties in Seaforth in
case the Lorne Villa property does not meet
its needs. He says he hopes to know within
month if the deal can proceed.
"This is all preliminary still," he says.
