Preschool speech program, smallTALK, in second year
January marked the second year of service for the Huron -
Perth program smallTALK, which is part of a province -wide
initiative designed to improve preschool speech and language
services.
For its second anniversary, smallTALK can boast some
important milestones. The Huron -Perth preschool speech and
language phone line had 379 referrals this past year.
Nearly 800 referrals for assessment by a speech language
pathologist have been made since 1999.
Parents can call with questions or concerns about the way
their child's speech and language skills are developing.
Parents and others who provide services to children, such as
doctors and early childhood educators, can also refer a child
for a speech and language assessment.
Compared to the referral rates from 1995 there has been
about an 80 per cent increase in the number of children under
five years who have been identified and received speech and
language services.
"Parents and those who provide services to children are
becoming more aware of the importance of speech and
language development and children are being referred for
assessment at younger ages," said Heather Kane, public health
nurse for smallTALK.
smallTALK focuses on prevention, finding children with
problems early and broadening the methods of treatment
, provided by speech language pathologists.
A child involved with smallTALK may now receive many
different types of services. For example, if a child attends a
daycare or nursery school, the speech language pathologist
consults with the teacher on a regular basis and together with
the parents, the child's progress is monitored.
"Early childhood educators play an important role in
promoting children's language development," says Mary
Louise La Berger coordinator of smaIITALK•
For the second anniversary of smallTALK all daycares and
nursery schools in Huron and Perth counties will get a copy of
"Learning Language and Loving it."
This guidebook is designed to help early childhood
educators promote the language development of all children
during everyday activities, routines and conversations, and
especially the language skills of those who don't
communicate as well as other children their age," said La
Berge.
Huron and Perth community agencies and parents, together
with a partnership between the Stratford General Hospital,
Perth District Health Unit and Community Care Access
Centre Perth County, provide direction to the program.
Services provided by smaIITALK are funded by the Ontario
Ministry of Health.
One in 10 preschool children has a speech and language
problem. Parents should trust their instincts and call
smallTALK if they are concerned about the way their child's
speech and language skills are developing, said Kane.
