Bell Canada grant to fund Internet
project to increase business in Huron
The Huron Business
Development Corporation's
Live Internet Call Centre
Business Feasibility Project
has been chosen from 46
community programs across
Ontario to receive $5,000
from Bell Canada's 2000
Economic Devblopment
Fund.
The Huron Business
Development Corporation
will receive the grant from
Bell Canada as part of Bell's
three-year, $800,000
commitment to community-
based projects throughout
Ontario.
"The internet has opened
up a whole new list of
opportunities for doing
business in rural Ontario,"
says Paul Nichol,
Community Development
Manager, Huron Business
Development Corporation.
"We plan to develop a
business case that ensures
some of those opportunities
come to Huron County."
Funding from the Bell
Economic Development
Fund will allow the Huron
Business Development
Corporation to test the
feasibility of establishing a
new internet-based Customer
Relations Management
business in Huron County.
The end goal of the
initiative is to attract
investment in a new, locally -
owned venture, which could
employ up to 100 local
residents.
This is the third year that
Bell Canada, in partnership
with Economic Developers
Council of Ontario (EDCO),
is providing financial
assistance to projects that use
telecommunications to
generate employment, create
wealth and promote
economic growth.
"2001 marks the
culmination of Bell Canada's
three-year commitment to
economic development to
communities across Ontario,"
C'ouncillors' fees not included as
Bluewater restructuring expense
By Angola Pickering
Lakeshore Advance Staff
Bluewater council has been
given a run down of
restructuring expenses to
date, including a little
surprise not covered by the
province.
Luanne Phair, Bluewater's
Treasurer and Deputy Clerk,
presented a brief report to
council at last week's
meeting, showing an amount
of $160,971.17 has been
spent on transition board
expenses. •
She noted $455,400 was
received from the province,
or 80 per cent of the
$569,250 allocated to
Bluewater.
Councillors were told by
Phair the ministry recently
expressed that councillor
fees for transition board
meetings would not be paid
by the province as an
expense of amalgamation.
Council expressed their
concern, some saying that

at Central Huron Secondary School last week pitted the

from Huron Centennial (right). Elementary school teams

councillor's fees were one of
the biggest costs during the
transition period and
wondered why it was not
included as a cost.
Phair said it was not known
in the beginning ,that the
meetings would not be
included, but it was hinted
by the ministry awhile ago.
Council wanted Phair to
double check with the
ministry to make sure
council fees were not
included and why.
Bluewater
to change
duplicate
street names
for 911 system
A sub -committee has been
formed to decide which
village in Bluewater will
change their street names
for the new 9-1-1
emergency telephone
system.
Bluewater council was
notified of duplicate road
names in Bayfield, Hensall
and Zurich. Each village
has a Mill Street; there is a
Main Street in Bayfield,
Zurich and Dashwood and
there is also a possible
duplication of Victoria
Street in two villages.
Council suggested a
committee be set up
consisting of a
representative from each
village. The committee will
report to council after
having the new names
checked with Ross Fisher,
the Roads Superintendent
for Bluewater and Huron
County.
Norm Berberich, of Bell
Canada, said currently the
dispatch for 9-1-1 still
receives a telephone call
with the old municipal
name displayed on the
screen. It will show the
phone number and name
and address of the person
calling.
Patricia Jacobi, Bell
Canada's Manager of 9-1-1,
explains the reason for
needing a change of
:duplicate names is because
eventually all the databases
will be changed to show
Bluewater instead of
Zurich, or Hensall, etc. She
said it is easier doing it
now, than later.
says Patrick Olive, President,
EDCO.
"We are honoured to have
been part of this program,
and are extremely pleased
with Bell's generous
contributions to this year's
projects. We are confident
the recipients of this year's,
and past years', Economic
Development Fund will
succeed with Bell's generous
support."
