Ashley Montgomery, a Special Olympics bowler from Seaforth Public School tries out a specially made ramp to assist with lining up the ball and pins. The ramp was built by students at Beal Secondary School in London after a Walton area man, John VanVliet, organized the project at the school through a family connection. The ramp was built with some of the proceeds of a fundraising effort by Seaforth Public School teacher's assistant, Paul Menary. He shaved his long hair to have made into a wig for cancer patients and to raise funds for Special Olympics. TME HURON EXPOSITOR, January 24, 2001-3 Gas leak Fills air with scent as couple find broken main Residents concerned it took too long to fix leak found at Boilersmith after fallen ice broke meter By Susan Hundertmark Expositor Staff A Seaforth woman who alerted Union Gas to a gas leak at Boilersmith Sunday, Jan. 14 said she's concerned that it took over an hour and a half for authorities to respond to the situation. But, Union Gas utilities service manager Jim McBride said the situation was a priority one call that was responded to as soon as possible. Liz Mason, of Railway St., said she and her husband Mark returned home at 7:30 p.m. a week ago Sunday to a strong smell of gas in the air. After walking around their house. the couple went into their house but when they could still smell the odour half an hour later, Mark went for a walk in the neighbourhood and found the smell was stronger near the Creamery and alerted a security guard there. Calls were made by the Masons to the fire department and then to Union Gas at about 9 p.m. and also several times afterwards by. the Masons and the Creamery security guard to the local emergency dispatch until a Union Gas representative arrived on the scene aroond 10:40 p.m. The Union Gas representative found the leak was caused by a smashed gas meter outside of Boilersmith, caused by fallen ice. Mason said her husband was told by the Union Gas representative that $5,000 in gas had f;scaped from the leak, which was capped by midnight that night. However, McBride disputed the amount of gas that escaped, saying that only the Union Gas engineers could determine how much gas escaped using a calculation of the size of the hole, the amount of time and the pressure of the leak. He said that calculation would not have been made at the scene. McBride said the incident at Boilersmith is an example of what can happen if snow and ice is not removed from roofs above gas meters, "This type of thing doesn't happen often but this year the AvonDISTRICT SCHOOL Maitland Learning for a Lifetime Welcome to Kindergarten The word "Kindergarten" literally means "child's garden". McBride said it was hard to comment on how datterous the situation may have been since the natural gas, which is lighter than air, was outside and dissipating into the atmosphere. "It could have blown like that for awhile. That's one of the inherent safety features of natural gas = that it's lighter than air, unlike propane, and doesn't puddle on the ground. As well, that's why we put the odourant into it so people can smell it." But, Mason said she was afraid the situation was "potentially fatal." "As a local resident, I was concerned for my own safety and for the town's. I've never smelled gas that strong before. I think there could have been something a lot worse happen there. It shocked me that the fire department didn't respond.. at least to secure the area." she said. Seaforth Fire Chief George Garrick said Monday that the fire department only responds to gas leaks if there is also a tire. "That would have been a Union Gas problem." he said. Boilersmith owner Charlie Smith said Monday he didn't know much about the Jan. 14 leak but thought it was caused by snow on the roof. "Everything is fixed and hack to normal and we'll take steps that something like that is much less likely to occur in the future. It's water under the bridge now," he said.
