HomeMy WebLinkAboutHuron Expositor, 2002-01-16, Page 5OPP briefs Alirm scares off thieves from Hensall LCBO An alarm scared off two would-be thieves at the Hensall LCBO trailer on Highway 4. OPP responded to the alarm on Jan. 14 at 3:15 a.m. but found no entry had been gained. Police have learned two young males fled the scene when the alarm went off, one leaving in a black, mid-size vehicle and the other in a white van which police believe may be the same van stolen from a Hensall residence and recovered early that morning in London. 'Man arrested after sleeping in back of car A 33 -year-old. Mitchell man was charged with liquor offences and spent the night in a Huron OPP jail cell on Jan. 13. OPP were called to Browntown Road in Grey Township where a citizen came across a vehicle in the ditch. OPP arrived just before midnight and found an intoxicated man asleep in the backseat. Couple charged in domestic dispute Both a 46 -year-old man and 47 -year-old woman from Hensall have been charged with assault after a domestic dispute on Queen Street in Hensall. OPP were called Ian. 13 at 11 p.m. and found the two occupants at the Queen Street home had assaulted each other after arguing over financial matters. Drunk driver stopped A 27 -year-old Vanastra man has been charged with drinking and driving offences after being stopped by OPP on Jan. 13 at 12:15 a.m. OPP came across the man's 1978 GMC pickup truck swerving on County Road 4 in Hullett Township and pulled the truck over discovering the driver had been drinking. Van stolen from Hensall OPP are still investigating the theft and recovering of a van from Hensall on Jan. 14. The van was reported stolen from the driveway of a Main Street, Hensall residence at 5:45 p.m. The white 1994 Chrysler Voyager was found by London police in the city where it had been abandoned. County appoints members to its three main committees By Sarah Caldwoll Goderich Signal -Star Staff At the inaugural meeting of county council on Dec. 5, committees were formed for the upcoming year. There are three main committees at the county level, Agriculture, Public Works and Seniors Committee which deals with ambulance issues, the Social and Cultural Services Committee and the Health and Planning Committee. Each committee meets before the county council session to hear presentations and make recommendations on how county council should proceed on the issues at hand. The County appoints county councillors to their prospective committees. Coun. Ben Van Diepenbeek, reeve of Ashfield-Colborne- Wawanosh, was appointed the chair of the Agriculture, Public Works and Seniors Committee. His fellow committee members followed by the number of years appointed for are Coun. Bernie MacLellan, Huron East (1); Coun. Dave Urlin , South Huron (2); Bert Dykstra, Central Huron (2); Paul Klopp, Bluewater (3); Coun. Keith Johnston, Morris- Turnberry (3); and Warden Norm Fairies, Howick. Cour,. John Doherty, Goderich, was appointed the chair of the social and cultural services committee for one year. Also appointed to sit on the committee with him are Warden Norm Fairies, Howick, Coun. Carol Mitchell , Central Huron, (1); Coun. Dianne Denomme, Police warning area business of counterfeit bels Although no known bills have been found in Huron County yet, OPP are warning local businesses of an increased number of counterfeit bilis in circulation. The Royal Bank of Canada has advised OPP of a particularly Targe amount of counterfeit $100 bills on the streets. Meanwhile, officers in Huron County have come across several counterfeit $10 and $10 bills recently. OPP are reminding all local merchants to carefully inspect any cash being received and if they suspect any to be counterfeit, to contact police. Legitimate bills include the following characteristics: Planchettes, small green dots randomly placed on bills will peel off is scratched without leaving a hole in the paper and glow fluorescent in ultraviolet light. The ink on real bills on the numbers, portrait, coat of arms and vignette of the — parliament buildings feels thicker to the touch while a counterfeit bill remains smooth. Real bills have clearer printing with fine lines in the hair of figures on the bills and the eyes and clear and sharp while . a counterfeit bill may appear dull and lifeless. The colour and tint of real bills is difficult to duplicate so a counterfeit's colour may appear different when compared to a real bill. Rob Morley, South Huron, was appointed the chair of the Health and Planning committee for a two year term. Also appointed to the committee are Warden Norm Fairles, Howick; Coun. Deb Shewfelt, Goderich (1); Coun. Doug Layton, North Huron (2); Coun. Jeff Howson, North Huron (2); Coun. Bill Dowson, Bluewater (3) and Coun. Lin Steffler, Huron East (3).
