Family traditions make
Christmas a soft, simple time
Christmas for
me is a warm
time, a soft time,
a simple time, a
time for family
to be together. A
time to enjoy
your individual
family traditions.
The traditions you have spent years building -
building as a family.
As an only child I was part of a very small
family; but my father always held Christmas
as a family day, we all remained home on
Christmas Day. You could have anyone in
and everyone was welcome, but we spent the
day home together.
Christmas celebrations started then, as they
do now, with church service Christmas Eve -
as a teenager it was important to sit on the
left side of the church so you could see who
received their diamond. Years later I became
engaged at Christmas.
Returning home from church you had
special foods, one time a year foods and two
presents were opened, then stockings were
hung and to bed. Early Christmas day you are
up and stocking presents are opened. They
ate all individually wrapped - mysteries to

start a
wonderful and
mysterious
day. Then a
special
breakfast has
to include
peameal bacon
and homemade
wild black raspberry jam. The remaining
presents are then opened - wearing your best
sleepwear - after you're dressed in your
finest, enjoy your new gifts and partake in a
traditional dinner turkey, etc.
Now I am still part of a very small family
and the traditions I learned as a child have
becomes ours as a family today.
It is the reason you rush around and work
to prepare for Christmas.
You never know from one Christmas to the
next what will happen in your family, but
even if it is only for one day a year no
difference is so great you cannot be a family
and celebrate Christ's birthday with a family
celebration.
Traditions bring you together. You can
even feel the warmth of family members no
longer with you.
To all a very merry and happy Christmas.

precious. Imagine teams of
snorting, heavy horses
blowing their steam -like
breath into the freezing air.
Some heading home after a
day in town, heavy with bags
of freshly -chopped grain
from Bob Aberhart's mill.
Shopping done, last-minute
presents bought, and bodies
all wrapped up cozily for the
bitterly cold ride home. The
inner warmth of a bit of
Christmas cheer and the
rattling harness and jingling
bells might lull some into a
quiet doze. But
it didn't really
matter - for the
horses knew the
way home.
From where
I stood in the

dad's jewelry store, I could
just peer over the top of the

horn and a bass drum and a

Christmas carols in front of

store. On the corner, just
over John Street was Tom
