By Scott Hilgendorff
Expositor Editor
The following is the third
and final story featuring the
recipients of this year's
Seaforth Citizens of The
Year Awards.
The Seaforth Caring and
Sharing program brought
Gail Hugill and Helen
McKellar together as leaders
In a program that brings
them a lot of fulfillment
helping people within in the
wrganization and throughout
ith outreach activities that
take them to retirement
homes and the hospital.
It also brought them
together for this year's
Seaforth Humanitarian
award, one of three Citizen
of the Year awards issued
'annually.
"We help others to get
!through their problems,"
said Hugill.
"I really enjoy helping
;people. I really like looking
!after people. I want to be
;doing for other people," said
McKellar who was one of
the first facilitators for the
program when it started
:about five years ago.
Caring and Sharing is run
through Canadian Mental
'Health but the program is
open to anyone over the age
of 16 who wants to get
together for friendship and
;to take part in the group's
activities and project.;.
The group normally has

about a dozen members who
get together regularly to
play games and to be of
support to one another.
They also reach out to the
cgmmunity . personally
taking cards and flowers to
seniors in the retirement
homes and people in
Seaforth Community
Hospital on a regular basis.
Hugill thinks the card and
flower program is one of the
most important activities of
the group reaching out to
people who don't always
have a ton of visitors or get
a chance to get out to see
people.
"A lot arc in bed and don't
get out of the building that
often," said Hugill.
She said
they spend a lot of time in
the facilities making sure
everyone is visited before
they leave.
"I've had a lot of illness
myself. I think it builds you
up and helps you get better
faster," said McKellar of the
hospital and retirement
home visits.
She said it' is
important to be supportive
and help as much as they
can.
"It's lots of fun
too," she adds of the
fellowship time the
members spend together
playing games and taking
part in other social
activities.
Gail Hugill
McKelJar
said the
experience has been very
rewarding working with the
group.
She stresses anyone can
join
"Helen was the only
leader and needed help,"
said Hugill of her decision
to get involved after taking
part in the services offered
by the program.
McKellar said she can't
imagine not taking part on
the program, adding taking
part makes her feel better
too.
"When you go home after
being with everyone, you
feel good also about
yourself too," she said.
HADD
people urges not to drink and drive
!To the Editor:
As people rush around
buying gifts, decorating their
homes and/or preparing for
Christmas, the MADD
(Mothers Against Drunk
Driving) Huron/Bruce
Chapter wants to remind
everyone that there are
families in the Huron/Bruce
area who will not be
celebrating this holiday
season with their loved
one(s).
Instead, there is an empty
chair and grief in the hearts
of families who have lost a
son, daughter, parent, aunt,
uncle, cousin, niece, nephew
or friend to an impaired
driver. •

provided" to the ministry next month. The OFA just
completed a nine -meeting consultation schedule with
farmers across the province, seeking input for the
regulations that have to be written to support the
legislation.
'The need is urgent to establish farm -specific nutrient
management plans as the provincial standard,"
Wilkinson's letter to the minister states. He cites ongoing
situations where farmers have met existing requirements
for nutrient management plans (NMP), along with
OMAFRA guidelines, and yet find their plans to expand
their farming enterprise impeded at the municipal level.
"There is a real concern that an approval process can be
disrupted by anyone who happens to disagree with a
decision," Wilkinson says about the current situation
farmers face.
"It is absolutely essential that a mechanism be put in
place that deals quickly and decisively with any appeal
launched against a NMP," he says.
Wilkinson's letter to the minister requested an
OMAFRA / agricultural community consultation on the
necessary regulations early in the new year as a means of•
ensuring the regulations are ready for implementation
once the legislation is passed sometime in 2002.
