Computer glitch
causes io-hour
banking shutdown
at TD Canada Trust
Seaforth's branch of the TD Canada Trust doesn't know
yet how many local people were affected by a computer
glitch that caused a l0 -hour outage on the weekend of its
Canada -wide automated -banking -machine network.
"I've had a couple of people let me know and wondered
what was going on but I haven't heard from a lot of
people yet. 1 know all of our staff was affected but they
used cash or cheques or credit cards," says Seaforth
branch manager Cheryl Ryan.
TD Canada Trust media spokesperson Jeff Keay says
any customer trying to do automated banking over the
weekend was affected by the computer trouble.
The problem affected bank machines, in-store debit
purchasing, online and telephone banking services.
"It was a serious disruption and while they're rare
events, they do happen," he says. "We frustrated a lot of
people on Saturday."
Keay says. the computer hardware that stores memory
failed, causing a situation where transactions could not be
done. While the problem began Saturday at 11 a.m.,
technicians had the system operational by 9 p.m.

Dublin youth wins plowing scholarship
By Mardy Bacigalupo
Advocate Staff
Paying special attention to
the straightness, evenness and
general appearance of his
fields after they have been
plowed has earned a young
Dublin area man a very
prestigious award.
Steven O'Rourke, 17, of
RR 1 Dublin recently
competed against seven other
young farmers at the
International Plowing Match
(IPM) in September in
Ottawa, and he was awarded
with a $2,500 scholarship.
"I am very proud of him,"
said Steven's mother Colleen
O'Rourke. "All of his
determination and hard work
paid off."
Steven's coach, George
Townsend of RR 4 Seaforth,
has been coaching Steven for
at least five years, showing
him things like how to set his
plow properly, how to create
a consistent appearance in his
plowing as well as how to
make his fields look nice.
The second youngest child
in a family of five brothers
and one sister, Steven has
grown up working hard on
the family farm and says he
has always planned on being
a farmer himself.
"All of us enjoy plowing,"
said his dad, Dan O'Rourke.
"We take a lot of pride in it."
Steven is not sure where he
will go to do his post-
secondary education but says
this scholarship will $2,500
of his tuition to the any
agriculture -based college or
university of his choice.
Although Steven is proud
of his achievement in Ottawa,
he has also worked very hard
to win the distinguished title
of Junior Reserve Champion
at the Huron County Plowing
Match for the third time this
past August.
"This was my third time
going (to the IPM), but only
my second time going for the
scholarship," he said. "This is
the best I have ever done at
the Internationals."
Once a contestant has won
a scholarship at the IPM, they
are not allowed to vie for it
again. As it turned out this
year, the contestants in
second and third place
(Steven and another
competitor), were awarded
with the scholarships.
Throughout their six-day
stay in Ottawa, Steven
competed on four different
days plowing a piece of land
50 feet by 250 feet, in a
maximum time span of two
hours and 45 minutes.
"That was our vacation,
going down there (to Ottawa)
and just plowing," he said.
"When you plow (in the
Huron County Plowing
Match) they judge you on
points and you have to have
so many to go to the IPM,"
he explained.
This same system is used at
the IPM, as contestants are
awarded points for their
plowing skills and are
awarded accordingly.
Steven says the highest
amount of points he has
received in Huron County
was 138 and he says it is not
often that people get over 140
points.
"The school (St. Mike's in
Stratford, where Steven is in
Grade 12) encourage and
support him," Colleen said.
"The teachers and everybody
have been very supportive
and it is good when you
know a high school is behind
you."
Each day before school,
Steven and his siblings that
are still living at home head
down to the bam to do some
morning chores and spend a
total of four or five hours
working on the family farm
every day.
In addition to attending
school, working on hip
homework and contributinf
to the O'Rourke dairy farm
Steven works for Johr
Freriks,, of RR 5 Mitchell, or
his pig farm.
