Seaforth man, 23,
charged with five
counts of assault
A 23 -year-old Seaforth
man has been charged with
five counts of assault and one
count of threatening after a
disturbance in a parking lot
behind the Commercial
Hotel in Seaforth on Oct. 14.
The man had attended an
apartment to speak with a
woman over a medical
situation in the family at
10:30 a.m. The two had an
argument that turned into a
physical confrontation which
spilled out into the parking
lot where a second assault
occurred.
The two then went to the
hospital over the medical
issue where anotherassault
occurred and then to a
residence where a fourth
assault happened. A fifth
assault finally occurred in the
parking lot.
Police say more people
were involved in the assaults
than the man and woman but
will not say how many or
their relationships to each
other. They will -say that the
five assaults all occurred
during the morning.
During the investigation, it
was also discovered that the
man made a threat against
someone's life.
The man was first held for
a bail hearing and released to
attend court in Goderich on
Nov. 5.

THE HU110N EXPOSITOR, Octobor 24, 2001-3
SDHS only high. school named for
possibly closure in director's report
schools could be closed and,
From Pogo 1
mainstream secondary
schools (excluding the
alternative programming at
Bluewater Secondary School
in Goderich) have fewer than
the optimum number of
students necessary, under the
province's educational
funding formula, to secure the
full level of funding for a
principal.
The report's summary
shows two other secondary
schools -- in St. Marys and
Mitchell -- were considered as
candidates for joining SDHS
on the list for possible
closure.
St. Marys DCVI was saved,
however, by its proximity to
the board's border with the
Thames Valley District
School Board (TVDSB) and
the fact it draws students who
attend TVDSB elementary
schools in Oxford and
Middlesex Counties.
Mitchell District High
School, meanwhile, was not
placed on the list because its
closure would prevent the
board from considering other
options for reducing the
amount of empty student
spaces, including relocating
Grades 7 and/or 8 students
into secondary school
settings.
'The closure of SDHS can
occur in isolation and not
have a negative impact on
other scenarios," the report
states.
While portions of the
director's report show the
board is open to moving
Grades 7 and 8 to a high
school setting, that option in
Seaforth is not supported
since the report says "a
projected enrolment of 278 at
SDHS could be
accommodated at Central
Huron S.S."
Among elementary schools,
Downie Central Public
School (R.R. 2 St. Pauls) is
again on the list for possible
closure, as it was two years
ago.
In 1999, Avon Maitland
staff removed Downie Central
from its list for possible
closure part-way through the
process, citing difficulties In
finding appropriate spaces for
displaced students in
surrounding schools.
This time, the North Huron
County area
is probably
hardest-hit on
the list for
potential
closure.

Also in Perth County, study
for potential closure is
recommended at Mornington
Central Elementary School
(R.R. 1 Newton), Sprucedale

In the Goderich/Clinton
area, possible closure is listed
for Colborne Central Public
School (Goderich) and
Holmesville Public School.
An appendix within the
report suggests both schools
could be closed, with students
adequately accommodated in
four nearby facilities.
Trustees were set to vote on
the list at last night's meeting.
