You can go in the field and find your way back out," said Nadine Ringgenberg, whose mother, Annelies, came up with the idea after seeing a similar maze in Switzerland last year, before they moved to McKillop, where the maze is located. While yields have been badly hurt in com fields thanks to a hot dry summer, several farmers in Southwestern Ontario are getting more out of their fields before harvest by creating mazes, a sign that Discover the Keys to the Kingdom with LIBERTY SAVAR Celebrated author of Shattering Your Strongholds Blyth Memorial Hall Friday, September 21, 7 p.m. Sunday, September 23 Weekend Admission - $30 plus Free Will Offering to Savard Ministries Sponsored by Blyth Community Church of God and The Gift Chest in Wingham Limited Seating Available For Tickets Call Blyth Festival Box Office 519-523-9300 Group Rates Available 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 Happy 50th Anniversary Joseph and Mary Ellen 4 Delaney September 1, 2001 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 Love, Yvonne, Maureen, Jim, Jayne, Lucille and families • ANNIVERSARY OPEN HOUSE for JIM & KATE KEYS Family & friends are invited to the White Carnation, Holmesville on SUNDAY, SEPT. 2 7:30-9:30 pm Gifts graciously declined. Agri -tourism is a developing industry, seeing farmers and organizations planning activities like farm hiking tours that draw people into the agricultural communities where they can learn and discover more about where their food is produced. Ringgenberg said they wanted to give the corn maze idea a try after seeing one in Switzerland. Not knowing for sure how to develop one, Ringgenberg said they waited until the corn had grown a little and then pulled out enough plants to create a maze in the field. With the corn now high enough to block any view out of the field, people can enter the maze and work their way through a pattern filled with dead ends and scarecrows waiting to point them on their way. Ringgenberg said it usually takes people between 20 and 30 minutes to work their way back out of the maze which is abouy one kilometre long. The maze is open from I to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and will be operated until the corn is harvested from the field. The maze has been open for about two weeks now and, for its first time in operation, Ringgenberg said it has not been too busy yet. Dublin residents quiet as CIBC prepares to close local branch By Susan Hundertmark Expositor Staff While a 500 -name petition protested the coming closure of the Atwood branch Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) and Monkton residents are planning community meetings to try and replace their CIBC branch with a credit union, the Dublin community is relatively quiet as its CIBC branch prepares to close this December. The CIBC recently announced the coming closure of its three Perth County branches with a letter to customers in June. "A lot of people said they figured it was coming to an end in 1999 when the branch reduced its hours to three days a week," said Theresa Maloney, secretary at the Dublin Feed Mill. She says that while the feed mill as a business will not be affected by the branch's closure, she thinks fewer people will be coming to the village without the bank. "If they don't need to come hem to bank, they won't come," she says. Maloney adds she thinks the older people will be most affected by the bank's closure. "The older people are going to find quite a change but without a grocery store here, they have to leave town anyway," she says. Joyce Shewan, part owner of Merv's Patios, agrees the CIBC branch closure in Dublin will probably affect the older residents of the village. "It's not going to affect us because we haven't banked them for four or five years. They sent all their business to surrounding communities when they downsized," she says. Runa Dhar, corporate communications officer with CIBC in Toronto, says the Dublin branch is due to close Dec. 14 and merge with the Seaforth • • • • • • • • • • BOCK 8 Doe for KEVIN STIRLING and JUDY DOLMAGE Saturday, September 8 9 pm - 1 am Seaforth Community Centre Age of Lunch Majority Provided For more info & tickets 527-1471 or 527-2230 • branch. Closure of the Monkton branch is happening Jan. 11, when it will merge with the Milverton branch while Atwood is closing Jan. 18 when it will merge with the Listowel branch. "Fewer and fewer people are going into the branches. Electronic banking is increasing significantly," says Dhar. Members of the Monkton community who want to keep a bank in their town held a press conference last night and are planning a public meeting Sept. 19. Monkton and area businesses, service clubs and residents have invited Rick Gerrow, general manager of the Mitchell Credit Union to discuss opening a branch as the CIBC branch closes. Dhar says that while public protest might not keep the CIBC branches open in the three communities, CIBC is trying to respond to local concems. "Losing clients is always a concern and we're hoping to retain as many clients as we can. We're aware of the credit union looking at Monkton," she says. In response to a 500 -name petition in Atwood, in which half were actual CIBC customers, Dhar says the bank increased evening and weekend banking hours and did renovations to the branch in Listowel to make it wheelchair accessible. "We will review any requests and look at any letters and suggestions," she says. As well, she says all three branches that are merging with the closing branches are planning to offer training sessions for customers to help them learn electronic and telephone banking between now and the time of each closure. "No one is losing their job. The same faces will be at the new branches," she says. Dhar adds she has received no formal protest from the Monkton community yet. i i ,•""°':.0*i.:‘,""Nik,0 klc Happy e t) V 25th Anniversary ) Frank & Mary Ann i • Verberne • ii August 28, 1976 a Love: Your Famih• di Friends r.4.144).#71 FRI. & SAT. 6:45 & 9:15 PM SUN.- THURS. 8 PM FRI. & SAT. 6:45 & 9:15 PM SUN.- THURS. 8 PM COARSE LANGUAGE SEXUAL CONTENT LANGUAGE MAY OFFEND LONG DISTANCE' CALL 1400.265-3438 FOA TOLL FAZE MOVIE INFO The Eckert family wish to invite relatives and, friends to 00 OPEN HOUSE to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of SISTER MARGARET ROSE in the Order of the Ursuline Sisters at the Seaforth Curling Club Sunday September 9 2-4 pm Bed Wishes Only or 0 donation to the Food Bank HAPPY 16th BIRTHDAY "IRShawn Van Dyk September 1st 111Fiw.• 1 I • 1) Love: Your Family
